Today I read on a different MP3 forum that both the 400/500 motors are the same, explaining the 1 mph difference in top speed. It was said that the motors are only different internally to satisfy some Euro. country requirements to meet different country specifications. Anyone know this to be true or false ?

False

http://www.piaggiousa.com/scooters.html#!s=overview/mp3-400

the 500 is 492.7cc
the 400 is 398.9cc

top speed is affected by things like gearing, aerodynamics etc.

they are basicly the same a 400 has 399cc a 500 493cc

the differents is in the Torque and horspower not in the topspeed

a stock 500 does 1 or 2 miles more due to euro 3 norm when you going to mod enginewise the Fuoco / 500 has more left then a 400
a 400 is allmost at his max, you could sqeeze out 2 or 3 bhp more so you could it get up to 38 BHP, and with a 500 you can get it up to 50bhp that's 9 bhp more

resulting in a much higher topspeed mine does 179km/h at 8200 RPM on GPS it takes a while but it can reach it
but a nice cruizing speed is 150km/h on GPS at 7500 rpm's a 400 is struckling to get that my max was 157km/h on GPS when it was a 400

Heads different. No one mentioned that. The 400 has one spark plug the 500 has two.

the twin spark could also be fitted to the 400 the twinspark doesn't make any change in bhp torque or topspeed only alittle bit better spark

Usually twin spark plugs is done to meet govt. regs. for a clean enough motor(to govt.). In some cases it improves mileage too.
