Hi, I have had a Hip replacement 6 weeks ago and everything is going fine, but I can't wait until I can ride my Vespa GTS 300 again, has anybody had a Hip replacement and if so how long did they wait before riding again ?
I have been riding my exercise bike and all is fine.

The short answer is: it's all about the wound.
I've had both replaced, osteo was my reason. I am 74.
The 1st to go was the left hip, replaced 12/2015; next the right on 7/2017, both done via anterior approach. Posterior requires a longer entry wound thus takes longer to heal, non matter the persons age, overall health, etc..
It's an extremely common procedure in the USA done in the many thousands per year and by far an easy recovery. I did the PT for ~ 4 weeks on a prescribed and assisted basis but honestly could be done at home if you have the Rx for the PT.
Driving can be done nearly immediately once the wound allows. My doc says to not lift much, etc., until he views the 6 weeks xray and sees that all is in place. At 6 months checkpoint he allows any former activity.
A nephews wife, age ~ 40 or so had hers replaced and her doctor doesn't "believe in PT" which seems odd to me? FWIW, her husbands a surgeon so she likely went to "his" hospital.
At my 1st PT place there were a number of hip people at the same time as me and the posteriors took about twice as long as me to get to exit point.
My doctor requires you to walk the hall & climb stairs up and down while under a PT's supervision, the day of replacement.
Another FWIW comparison for you is that this costs ~ $55,000-60,000 USD where I had mine done, The University of Kentucky Hospital, Good Samaritan location. As I am a retired teacher my insurance is with United Health Care Supplemental Medicare plan. I pay a few hundred dollars out of pocket and ~ $100 monthly to the Feds for my medicare. Typical doc visit is ~ $4.
What do they say in the UK as to getting your teeth cleaned after the hip?
MY doc is in a group of doctors that require a several hour class prior to surgery and I saw people of ages 20's up to past me in there.

No Hip but a while back i had my L knee replaced. The DR said 3 months. Yeah right. I was riding at around 3 1/2 weeks. Nerd emoticon Before that i would go down and sit on it. Around 4 weeks they stopped my PT. I was one of the fastest people they had ever had. Riding my scooter was a big motivator. I suspect you'll be the same. When i started back riding my first ride was 15 miles. I definitely over did it. One thing to remember is how ever many miles you do, your going to have to get home so double it. I was so happy to ride again that it didn't dawn on me that i had to get home. Good luck

Hip replacement operation
I am 70 years old.this is my second hip replacement, I had my left one done March 2017 ,and I have just had my right one replaced both posterior 6 weeks ago, got me out of bed 5 hours after the operation and made me walk the length of the ward with a frame then back into bed, next got me exercising and walking with crutch's.
I was discharged from hospital 2 day after the Op, after 5 weeks of exercise's I progressed to my exercise bicycle, also walking without any stick as I have 2 Afghan Hounds which I walk with my wife, and ride my bicycle 3 miles every other day and drive my car,so getting on really well with no pain. I followed all the procedures I was given to me by the Hospital.
So hopefully will be able to ride my Vespa GTS 300 at 8 weeks.

Good luck on recovery
I would say 8 weeks if you feel strong enough to ride, longer if you want to be on the safer side. Please do your exercises even after PT is done, continue your strength training, those muscles will hold the hip in place preventing hip dislocation.
I agree the Anterior approach is quicker way to recover.
I used to work at a PT clinic for a while, then I started doing surgery imaging so I have seen the surgery and the recovery part of the procedure.

Good luck and ride safe.

I fully agree with the 8 weeks to ride two wheels on pavement.

I had my left hip done 6 weeks ago yesterday, and I've been riding both my '90 Kawasaki EX500 and my 2016 KTM 1190 for about 2 weeks. Haven't had a problem with either, although the KTM, while a tad easier to sit on while riding, is a bit tougher to mount and dismount, being so tall. If you're off the pain killers and everything moves OK without pain, go for it!

hip replacements
I had both hips done 12 weeks apart, about 3 years ago, the doctor left it up to me to decide, i waited about a month after physical therapy was over, then it was all good to go, I was 55 yrs old when i had this done. still doing good with them.

Hip Replacement
I've had two hip replacements, both in the right hip. My first was 17 years ago.
My orthopedic surgeon said to favor the right leg since the replacements don't last forever. My second (also in the right hip) was one year ago. That surgeon did not offer an opinion on using the center stand, but my physical therapist said it was a good thing to switch to a side stand since the ergonomics of using the center stand wasn't "favoring the right leg". As I get older, I'm starting to get the hint that body parts don't last forever so I'm more careful in how I use
them. Glad that I switched to the side stand. But that's just me "just saying".

I have a friend who fell from a ladder while contracting-broke his hip in late 1980's. He's had 3 hips on one side but probably now has his last.
At the pre surgery class and per my own look/see the new ones have no know wear out time for replacement. The one's I have were passed around the room and I asked that same question of , "how long"? The answer was that the newest version it's not been seen to wear out.
I talked to a guy in my docs waiting room who had his 2nd one side and maybe getting a 3rd the other side. Infections both plus he told me his hobby was weight lifting competitions and the guy was ~ 60 yrs old, so go figure on that one...
I get my dental work done at the U of KY Dental College, the kind of place that's on top of that field, as you would think. When I get my teeth cleaned the use of an antibiotic varies with who the faculty prof is for my student dentist. The pre surgery class they said to not get your teeth cleaned which has evidently changed to avoid it if you have poor dental health. Mine is just fine.

Hip replacement operation
There is just one other question, one problem I keep think about is putting the Vespa GTS 300 on its centre stand ? (normally this is pretty easy) the prop stand is a pop up one so not very safe or secure.
Anybody tried this after a hip replacement on a GTS 300

How long are your arms? Laughing emoticon If long, I suppose one could use their left foot on the centerstand. Were it me, I'd avoid it and use my sidestand which works OK when your cautious about angles.
