Just saw this on BBC news. Could have been worse. Gist of the article was about the appropriateness of the $400 fine. I suspect the PTW community as a whole would strongly disagree.

Interesting to see the motorcyclist's response. Not sure why he had his feet down, but definitely a freakout moment.

Hi.

Is that the correct link? You mentioned something about a motorcycle and the video is for a car going through a gym wall in southern Cal.

It's a 49 second video. The next video in the link (which might auto play) is the car going through a gym wall.

Erm, no.

Fixed it for you....I hope.

Still thinking about the perfect world response (other than trucker not on his phone ) That wobble and feet down suggested he wasn't going for optimal braking. Possible to accelerate and turn sharply in same direction as the truck? Not much time to sort out one's choices, unfortunately. Nerd emoticon

That's 400 Canadian, so about 300 US. Even worse.

Novice Rider. Should have seen the guy coming even though he was in the wrong. The Guy/gal is very lucky to be walking away from that.

Agree with NOJO, the rider was in the right , but could have easily been dead right. The fine, however, is unfortunately normal for the situation.

Hell, that'll barely get you a couple months or less at Tim Horton's.

Always hard to know what it's like on the ground, but yeah, I suspect it might be relatively easy to avoid just by anticipating a problem. I never assume anything at intersections.

At risk of being rude.
While waiting at a light, I have 90% concentration on the light. When the opposing light turns yellow, I scan for vehicles that aren't slowing to stop. I would have seen that.

I've got a coupon!

At intersections (and everywhere else), the rule of boating applies. Bigger one wins. We ride like everyone is out to get us, because they are! With such a small fine/payment it makes me feel like a second class citizen. How does 400 Canadian deter anyone from just running one of us over?

Manslaughter? Think the fine for that one is bigger on both sides.

And that is why you ride with your head on a swivel, constantly scanning and looking. Even though it was the truck driver's fault, it could have easily been prevented if the rider had paid even a little bit of attention to his surroundings.

Pragmatism. The rider is still alive and not seriously injured. Insurance will pay for the bike. Truckdriver/company will not dispute the fine.

Any other way lawyers/courts will get involved, cost the taxpayer more money, the court time. Lah, Lah , lah.

I suspect the driver also has points on his license.

The point is that the only reason the rider is still alive is due to his own actions. The semi driver did nothing to prevent the collision.

Sadly, had he NOT been aware of the truck to his right, he would have been another fatal statistic on why PTW's are dangerous. If not for the dashcam, he could also have alleged that the rider jumped the green.

In South Africa we have minibus taxis who engage in traffic light athletics all the time - running reds, jumping greens and leaping at yellows. My work commute involves 31 lights in the morning and 29 on the way home. I have yet to have a single direction trip where I witness LESS THAN THREE incidents - often multiple vehicles. So I can say 10% of all traffic lights I ride through involve an illegal action by other drivers.

On a PTW, I regard a green light as a yield sign.

We ride on the LEFT, so check the other side's traffic lights... On the red look right for slowing traffic and do not move until you have SEEN them stop. On your green look left as you enter the intersection to be sure those vehicles have stopped.
