Good day. I'm replacing the clock battery (386) on the GTS 300 and have the headset apart. Wondering if the speedometer inner cable should be removed and lubricated with grease as a maintenance item?
The outer housing is fine and the speedometer was working well. OTOH, the plastic headlight shell was off being painted, and just wanted to do preventive maintenance
Unscrew the upper end of the speedometer cable from the speedometer
Remove the small bolt at the lower end of the cable and pull the assembly straight out. The square end of the inner cable is easily seen
Up top, pull the inner cable up and out. Comes easily. I sprayed it with
CRC white lithium grease as the inner cable was pushed down until it reappeared down below. Reinserted the lower assembly and tightened the bolt
Went up top and connected the cable to the speedometer, after verifying the inner cable was seated appropriately
Speedometer cable lubricant is traditionally a thin oil with graphite in it, so the lubricant doesn't clump up and bind, stick to contaminants or get real thick in cold weather, which can cause the speedo to get a little jumpy. Many companies make it, and you can find it at a lot of auto parts stores.
