Would a crack in the air box cause any kind of air leak symptoms? There's a gasket between the box and the carb so I figure there must be a decent amount of seal required.

Felt washer was also too far back on the inlet and is dry, ( bike sat for 5 years without use )

Probably best to replace it with a metal one. The reproductions are cheap and work fine.
