In excellent condition at a dealership, it's a 2500 bike all day long. What you are describing isn't either of those things. Sounds like it was dropped once and put away. Somebody probably bought it for someone else as a gift.
That's not an unreasonable price if the bike looks and acts like it's got 300 miles on it, like it's a brand new bike. This one doesn't. Someone has been on craigslist and confused what the nutjobs ask for "rare Vespa investment scooter" with what people are actually paying. Anything that declines in value is not an investment. Based on your description of a bike that isn't rideable and has cosmetic damage, it's about a 1200 bike to someone who knows how to make it right without taking it to a dealer, someone with plans for it who can see it's potential and get a deal on parts and bodywork. In the excellent condition you would expect of a bike with 300 miles, a private seller is probably looking at 1800 or 2K. OTOH, you can't put miles back on a bike, and sometimes you just like something. So if you want it, offer them what they are asking if they fix the running condition and paint. Then, after they've found out what it is going to cost to fix those things, offer them a grand. You will end up in a good, and fair, place.

Motovista I respect your judgement I have spoken to you many times I will call the gentleman tomorrow and tell him I am not interested and continue to ride my 2005 and 2006 GT200s with 15000 miles on them. He told me his dad bought it new and fell and never road it again. I hope to see you in Richmond good luck in the Cannonball

For the right money, I would buy it. 300 miles is pretty much a brand new bike. But it's not the showroom condition bike you would expect for $2500. It's like a dealer demo that got dropped a couple of times on test rides.
The problem with buying a lot of these things is that you can't ride them all, and sooner or later you pick one out that you really like to ride, and a week goes by before you ride the other ones, then a month, then you are cleaning the carb, buying a new battery, killing the wasps that built a nest under the horncover, and flushing the brake lines on a bike you don't ever ride. I have found that if you ride something, everyone who has one they want to sell tries to get you to buy it, especially if you say something like "if you ever want to sell it, let me know." It might be three years later, but you will hear from a lot of the people you said that to. If you drive a SAAB, you don't even have to say anything, people that are trying to sell one assume you are crazy enough to want two. |

Moto has it. People who own a Vespa have paid top dollar when new. Then it sits in the garage and doesn't get ridden but they still want to recoup some of their money. Good luck. The key to avoiding problems is they are made to be ridden, not to sit around. Like M says your lookin at having to change a lot of things. How many scooters do you have DEF? Would you ride it much? Good questions to ask your self before buying.

"in overall great condition. Has some mild cosmetic damage but that's pictured. We also currently can't get it started but that's either because we don't know what we're doing or because there's something wrong with it. "
It's banged up pretty bad and doesn't run. I can only imagine what they would consider poor condition. It sounds like they just want it gone. If someone was to go over, let them talk about the Vespa and Dad, and then explain what everything would cost to fix it, you could probably get a pretty good deal. |

Put an ad on craigslist with his phone number offering the bike for $400, willing to trade for hatchets or livestock or a portapotty, and say to call after 11 pm or before 6 am. After a couple of nights of being offered cows and chickens and a lot of calls from people he hopes don't find out where he lives, he might be open to a realistic offer.
