Pump the gas a couple of times so the accelerator pump primes the carb, then hold the button down until the motor catches, just like you would your car or anything else with a motor. You are not helping your bike at all by poking at it for a few seconds then letting up. That seems to be the new thing, and someone's going to come along and say why it's better than doing it the right way, and when I hear it in the shop, it gets on my nerves. Carb bikes are never the same, and you might find that you need to give it about a quarter throttle while you start it to get it to fire off. If you've ever been on a carb bike that just fires right up as soon as you touch the starter button, don't let that make you assume they all are going to do that or need to be fixed if they don't.
That's exactly how I start both of my 50cc scooters. Twist the throttle twice, open the throttle about 1/5, hit the start button and they fire right up. After 2 seconds I let go of the throttle, raise the stand, twist and go.
