Why would you buy from a dealer if you are buying used. I buy used to aviod dealer mark up and get a better price.
Dealers make their money off used vehicle because you can't look up and see what he paid for it.
Dealers generally dont need to mark up used bikes much since they murder the customer on trade in/acquisition value.
Case in point... I bought a 12 year old gsxr in pretty good shape from a local dealership for $1,400 (plus sales tax).
The bike was a couple years outside their "10 year model rule" and they didnt want to put tires, battery, or a basic service into it. About 5 hundred in parts & a few hours of my time made it the perfect project. This was a bike with only 9,000 original miles and it still had the original stock front tire on it!
About 1/2 way through the project I brought it to another dealership to have the master cylinder recall done on it. Because the first dealership missed that lil $300 Suzuki service gem.
but what did the dealer pay for it? $500 because they deduced all the stuff that needed done to it and tacked their labor costs on top as well to devalue the bike down . So if they bought it on trade in fro $500 they stuck you for $700 profit to them.
No dealer pays retail for any trade period, they get the trade value rock bottom and then cut it again.
If Turboblew perceived his purchase as a deal in his favor, who cares how much the dealer made on it?
One of the reasons dealerships exist is to earn a profit. If they can't profit, they'll close down.
Why did I buy my 2013 BV 350 from the dealership? A few reasons:
They are convenient to me (literally right next door to work).
They give me great service. When the freeze plug corroded out, they convinced Piaggio to cover the cost of the part. They (the dealer) covered the cost of the labor. They even gave me a loaner scooter so that I could still commute to/from work. All on an out-of-warranty, 3-year old (at that time) scooter. Had I bought from a private party, I probably would have had to pay at least the labor, and there's no way I'd have gotten a loaner.
They gave me a fair trade-in price on it when I bought a new 2017 BV 350 from them last month. They gave me just below Bluebook value, but it was having starting issues, and would stall out in the rain, so they're going to have to put some work into it to make it sellable.
If we don't support the dealers, they will go away. Not everyone has the skills/tools/facility/desire to do their own work. I'd rather take my BV to a dealer with a trained mechanic who is familiar with Piaggio than to some random mechanic who may not know the idiosyncrasies involved.
