Good morning everyone-
thought I would ask--we are currently cleaning out my parents house (my dad passed in 2012, and my mom is now in assisted living near me...). My 16 year old son came across my dad's old reel to reel recorder/player, and is intrigued....of course, the tapes my dad had were all to Dad's taste, and not Nates.

So, does anyone here (probably best in the US from a shipping standpoint) have any reel to reel tapes from the 1960's-70's ie-the stones, jimi Hendrix, the who, etc? that they feel they could sell at a dirt cheap price to a 16 year old?

Thanks!

I still have an old Sony operating on my system. What model did your dad have?

Reel to reel equipment and tapes are having a cult boom right now. Prerecorded tapes like you mention bring a lot of money. I've seen them go for $100 or more. I don't have any. Just what I recorded myself back in the day.

Lafayette Radio Electronics was a competitor to Radio Shack. I loved browsing in both those stores. Lafayette had great collections of raw speakers and other components for do-it-yourselfers.

They went the way of book stores before book stores went the way of book stores.

Cleaning out my parent's house now, and found my Dad's old Teac Reel to Reel that he bought in Tokyo and had shipped home.

I'll be going through the old electronics and related stuff this coming weekend.

Neat - I still have a couple of cassette players and many tapes. and still sometimes use them...
Having said that, you might check out Craigslist - locally, I see several folks interested in buying commercial reel to reel tapes, and a couple of other folks selling their collections, for about $5 per tape... If you keep an eye on it, something may very well turn up that piques your interest...
*(And now, having checked the prices of commercially-recorded reel to reel music tapes on eBay, I am astounded at the prices)...

My reel to reel is an Akai GX-4000D, bought it to replace another Akai that got stolen years ago. The cassette machine is a Realistic SCT-21 that was my second wife's late husbands machine, two for one deal there!

Never had any pre-recorded tapes. Being a cheap kid I used the reel to real to tape off the FM radio and then edited those over to cassettes for listening. Not the best deal for quality but I have somewhat of a tin ear so I could live with it!

Still have all those old tapes and every so often I put them on and listen to them as I have the stereo set up in my downstairs office. Some of the tapes on the reel to reel have news reports about `Nam and Nixon!

While we're on the subject of cassette tapes I use them every day. I drive an '83 El Camino, completely stock down to the original AM FM cassette radio. I make audio recordings of the news and listen while commuting. I have a home recorder with two auto-reverse decks that both record. When both sides of the first tape are full it starts recording on the other tape for, effectively, unlimited, uninterrupted recording.

I also have a Bluetooth device that looks just like a cassette so I can listen to music on my phone.

Vintage,
Question are you in need of some blank tapes? I have a package of 10 Fuji DR-II-90 High Bias cassettes factory sealed and five TDK D-90 IECI/Type 1 Normal Bias tapes also in factory sealed packages!

The thing about reel-to-reel tape decks is that they are recorders as well as players. That means you can make your own recorded tapes so long as you have a source for blank tape.

Thanks for the offer. Those are good tapes, especially the Fujis but I have plenty.

I can offer something myself here. I have about 20 new blank generic tape reels. 2400 ft. I don't want to get rid of them all but I could spare a few to anyone here for the price of postage.

Edit: they're1800 ft, not 2400. I didn't use the 2400 ft tapes very often because they are thin and fragile.

I guess I'm somewhat missing something here as other than the "Walkman" type cassette players the cassette decks have a record feature as well as play-back.

Heck, all 3 of my cars still have working, excellent CD & Cassette players in them. And I have at least 3 high-end, vintage cassette players in the house - and they are used, but not real often. Pretty much all of my tapes are homemade - including a bunch I made back in college for parties...

Wow...the cross-referencing of interests I find here...!

Had a few open-reel decks throughout the 80s into the early aughts; used one of the better ones (Tandberg TD 20ASE) for live recording at various NYC venues. Got a boxload of prerecorded o/r tapes from a West Coast hi-fi rep in the late 80s which I still have, but none but one or two are pop/rock in nature. And yes, I do still have a working cassette deck in my current hi-fi system (dual-well NAD, not bad, but not quite as high-end as the Nakamichis and Luxmans of my past). Have the mens to digitize everything, but takes a hell of a lot of time, so more often than not, when I want to hear something I don't have via any other medium - and I have more than a few recordings that aren't available by any other means - I just grab the tape, pop it in the deck, grab the liquid life-support system of choice and have a listen.
