Modern Vespa

Took out the pet carrier before fueling up the GTS 300 Saturday and noticed white corrosion- like flaky/powdery type bloom on the aluminum head, block and fins. Any idea what this is? It scrubs off easy enough but I don't want it to return.

I keep the bike under an aluminum patio awning and it is always kept covered. Less than 2,000 miles on the bike - had it 9 mos. 2016 GTS 300ie.

I think they call it "white rust" which I think over time if allowed to continue protects the aluminum from further corrosion.

Does it get damp there? If stored covered somewhere where condensation may happen that could be the cause.

Sounds like you two may be spot on. We had rain solid for two weeks while I was up in MD tending to my Dad's affairs in late April/early May. Odd that I didn't notice it sooner with as much riding as I've been doing lately. Will try to get it cleaned off tomorrow.

To me it's "white corrosion ", eventually most alloy gets it, I guess from moisture or something... I just wash/scrub it off, spray start-ya-bastard (my "fix all issues" magic), then ignore it... never appeared to cause any real damage

Probably CocaCola will sort it out?

Read some motorcycle reviews of the product ACF-50.
also watch a couple motorcycle youtubes re. the stuff.
I put it on all new motorcycles and scooters - front to rear, NOT on the brake discs. One spray can did 4 bikes.
Smells funny until it cooks in....then no more odor.

I want to keep my new metal new as long as possible.

It's typical corrosion seen on aluminium alloys, and given the right conditions it'll continue to spread.

It won't stop unless you protect the metal in some way and I find the easiest way to do that is to use a spray such as Inox, or ACF 50 looks good too.

I wouldn't even bother trying to wash or scrap it off, I'd just give it a spray and that's it. And unless you use a detergent or chemical wash on your engine it'll be fine for ages.
