Just spotted on my UK ISP's MD's blog:

https://www.revk.uk/2018/05/analogue-phones-1876-to-2025-rip.html

One good thing about the old PSTN system is that you don't need a local power supply to have a working phone. Just how they'll get around that to enable vulnerable people to contact emergency services under power cut conditions will be interesting...

That said, I don't have a landline at all here in the US, and in the UK I do have a copper pair, but there's no phone service on it, just FTTC internet.

That's really interesting Jim. I hadn't seen that. I'm superfast fibre cable internet and phone but with Virgin. Don't have an Openreach line anymore. The BT Openreach line became damaged years ago under the road and this reduced my BB speed. They would not repair it as they said it meant digging up the cable and of course, the road. They told me I'd have to put up with half my usual BB speed but wanted me to pay for my full speed still. So you can see why I changed providers. Openreach used to be a joke, and probably still are (no offence to any Openreach engineers on here) but you wouldn't believe the trouble we had with BT Openreach over the years. They even paid us compensation over some considerable trouble we had and paid us TWICE! I informed them and they said they'd take the money back but didn't so I emailed them, wrote to them and phoned them but after 6 months of trying to give the money back (it was hundreds of pounds) I gave up and kept the money! Talk about incompetent. Laughing emoticon
