I see several crank puller/installation tools for sale listed as being for both P-series and earlier. That is to say that they are capable of pulling in the crank on both later gear oil lubricated clutch bearing (inside seal) and earlier petroil lubricated bearing (outside seal). This doesn't make sense to me as on the earlier models the puller would make contact with the seal. Anyone know how this puller is supposed to work without damaging the seal?

I know that there is a factory tool to install the crank in to the fly side first on earlier models but this method is just a pain in the ass.

you don't use the puller the same way when the seal is on the outside.

The correct way to build VBB engine

I only briefly looked over the service manual but I still can't find any reference to a crank installation tool for a VBB, either clutch side or fly side. And that is my query, whether a factory tool exists and is it for clutch or flyside?

By my thinking, this tool will not work

This tool will work for fly side crank installation.

I have always just used heat and freezer. It works fine. But if there is a factory tool I would like to have it.

On the VBB the bearings go onto the crank first. Then the case is heated, seal seated, and crank with bearings inserted before it cools off. The blue Haynes manual covers the process well.

There is no "puller"
