Modern Vespa

(I did look on the forum before I posted this and couldn't find anything about it--hope it's OK to post a new topic.)

I picked up my new LXV yesterday and drove it around some, and again today, stopping at the grocery store. Every time I stopped and opened the seat cover (to get things out or put them in), I noticed a strong smell like hot plastic. It had less than three miles on it when I picked it up and probably about 11-12 now. Is this due to the catalytic converter? Should I be worried? Will it go away with time?

What you're experienceing is "new bike smell"
Since the bike is new, there are machining oil residue from manufacturing just as you would experience on a car. These oils/coatings will give off an odour for the first little while untill they burn off.

Congrats on the LXV. That's a gorgeous scoot...I'm still trying to convince my wife to get one.

The smell on my new GTV lasted a week or so...I guess it all depends on how much you ride it.

Thank you! It is really pretty, I think. I love the slightly "retro" styling. I've thought of getting a Vespa for years, and always assumed I would get a red ET4 (or now LX150), but when I went down to buy one I saw the LXV and that was it!

I actually remember fondly the smell you mention here. It doesn't last long, but you'll wish it did

Yeppers, I just bought at 2002 with 49 miles on it. Smelled like hot burning plastic. Awesome. I now have 163 miles on it and still kind of smell it in my garage when I put her away for the night.

New Vespa pheromones.....mmmmm.......
