Hey Guys - never did like the burnt out headlight look on MP3's - has anyone attempted to upgrade the lights say with a H4 bulb so each headlight is dual beam and lit.

Thanks

It would require quite a bunch of wiring and new bulb sockets to do what you suggest. Here is an easy way to have both bulbs on all the time. This is the way I run my MP3. At night you can still turn off the high beam and the flash to pass still works.

Thanks to Jimc for posting the links in much earlier threads. A simple search would have returned many relevant threads on this subject. Suggest you use the search function next time.

Let me make sure I understand . . . .After the re-wire, on high beam, I'll now have low and high at the same time - and on low beam position I'll only have low - is this correct?

I have had mixed results...
That Headlight suffers from Leakage and Lens Fog, after Modifications.

I did the switch mod, very easy to remove the spring to Run Dual Headlights.
Updated to the Brightest Bulbs I can find, and still have the OEM Light with no changes.

What you could do is purchase a Used Headlight, and Experiment on your own.
That way you have the original to put back in if you choose to do so.

On my MP3/250, I am running the Headlight for the MP3/300 Hybrid...
Very nice Chrome Insides and with the Brighter Lights with Silverstar Zxe same OEM recommended Bulb type, it works Great.
On my MP3/500 Sport, I am using Silverstar Zxe same OEM recommended Bulb type.

Thsnks
Use Search, we have a thread on that...
But basically..
You remove the screw, unplug the Switch on your Handlebar.
Look at the switch and you will see a small spring.
Take some needle nose pliers, and bend the spring to allow the "Flash" to stay engaged. Now you will have High, Low, and Flash that won't snap back (Both lights On).

Search is your Friend here...

Yes. That is correct. With factory wiring the low beam cuts off when you turn on the high beam. This rewire does away with that.

The rewire does exactly the same thing. Getting a short pin to stay in place can be a hassle as compared to soldered wires in there. It is only a 30 minute job and is very easily reversible. Removing the spring thing will work but the rewire is a much better way to do it in my opinion.

The bulbs are a pain in the butt to access, but changing out the stock bulbs to some Sylvania SilverStar Ultra bulbs makes a big difference for not a lot of money. This and the switch mod is so much better at night, especially with both bulbs lit.

In error I posted this on another thread when someone mentioned the headlight mod. So I'm going to post it on here as well. Here's a few images of the simple light mod that user Buckeye recommended. It works great!

PS I hope having this in two areas is not going to be a problem with the forum administrators, if so I'll delete one of them. Thanks

Mike

On the older MP3 500, it allowed you to have two low beams and two high beams on at the same time. It also allows the low beams to stay on when you flash your brights. This is important if you ever install HID low beams...

Thanks for the reply - that's my next upgrade either go with the Sylvania high intensity halogens or look at LED's.

Did you do this with the factory light bulbs or you changed the lightbulbs before you did the modification ? If you did what light bulbs do you recommend . Thank you very much.

My dual headlight mod doesn't require any dismantling or wiring , just one small hole, small screw, couple of washers and a little wiring anchor bracket I had in my bits box.

PS. Local Piaggio dealer announced today that New MP3 350 will arrive in Auckland in October.

Drilling a hole in the plastic seems more permanent to me than removing the spring or soldering the wires together. Both of those can be easily undone and look stock but that hole will always be there.

Late bloomer here... lol.. Does this mod also give dual High beams if you use Oram H/7/H18 LED bulbs? Or is one side low and one side high like before when using the "passing" switch?

Cheers!

Yes, the wiring mod will work with LED or Halogen BUT the real problem is the proprietary connector used in the high beam.

It is a weird and stupid design that only allows fitment of standard halogen bulbs AFAIK.

The low beam is not a problem and accepts the OSRAM H7 without any issues and is small enough to leave room for the rubber dust cap.

In summary,

For the low beam, you use this OSRAM as it fits perfectly without any modifications.

For the high beam, you either keep the stock halogen, a "premium" halogen (usually a waste of money), or you can try this OSRAM LED but I suspect its output will be poor and it has a very short lifespan (only about 1000 hours)

FWIW, I kept my high beam stock since I hardly ever use it

Hi! Thanks for the swift reply sbaert! I did the light mod today and installed Osram H7/H18 set. They are a 1:1 replacement for original halogen. Even fitted inside the proprietary high beam with some force.

But both cans are only lit when the high beam setting is on, or when flashing.. I thought that both cans would also be lit on low beam, but at a lower intensity light? I soldered a brigde as instructed. Did I miss a step, or is something lost in translation here Is it not possible to have both cans on at low beam/low light perhaps? Will the left side always be on highest intensity?

Thanks guys!

I am looking to do this modification this weekend. How did you get the bulb for the high beam to fit.

We didn't. The high-beam plug is a different type from the low-beam. You can kinda fudge the connection and then fudge the mount so it doesn't fall out Most people only do the LED low-beam and leave the high-beam traditional bulbs. But it can be done, I made it work on my 2016 but then reverted it back to the regular bulbs because I didn't want to risk an electrical short or issue with a sketchy LED high-beam connection.
