Ditch the store. The cashier probably ate your finger sticks and she's not coming up to confess to it. Take a receipt and demand to have your money back. Sorry to hear about the chickenless Caesar salad

GG is doing well and she is on the mend. Crisis averted. As to my foot I got a phone call yesterday and there is no fracture or no dislocation. So all is good on the Western front.

Procrastination is pissing me off.

Back in August I had Jury Duty. I got really lucky and the trial that was scheduled to end the Friday before didn't end, so the jury pool wasn't needed that Monday, and we were released from Service. My employer paid me for the full day of Jury Duty, and the County mailed me a $6 check for one day of Jury Duty.

When I received it, I put it in my bag to take to work and deposit it via mobile deposit.

I promptly forgot about it.

While going through my bag today, I found the check. It has a note on it that reads:

In accordance with State Law, funds become property of Dallas County if check not cashed within 90 days of issuance.

The date of the check is 8/26/2022. Today is 11/28/2022. 94 days have passed.

So I missed out on $6 due to my own procrastination.

Being short of money is not a shameful situation.
Wasting food though, is indeed shameful.

Doing our big monthly shop yesterday, we reached the hypermarket checkout with a full trolley of groceries.
Around half-way through checking out, I caught the smell of decaying meat.
Next to me was one of those shelves that retailers stock with candy and chocolate,
hoping for impulse purchases.
Lying on top of the candies was a pack of fresh chicken pieces.
Somebody had changed their mind or run out of money and had simply set the pack aside.
Being fresh chicken, it was already seriously "off" and would have to be destroyed.
On the other side of the checkout aisle was a fridge with sodas inside.
Had they only put the chicken pieces in the fridge, or had they told the check-out clerk, the chicken would not have spoiled and a staff member could have returned them to the shelf.
It was only two thighs and two legs, but that could have fed a family for a meal.
Instead, it will end up in an incinerator.

That was waste, not poverty.

The procrastination comes in because I could have simply done the mobile deposit at home when I received the check, but instead I put it off to do at work.

Then the forgetfulness kicked in.

In South Africa, the government owned central electricity agency (ESKOM) has the monopoly for electricity generation and distribution. Due to incompetent management unable to cope with ongoing operational issues, there is a shortage of supply. This is "managed" by rolling power cuts, politely referred to as "load-shedding". All very properly predicted by a number of programmers, there are apps for your cellphone that will tell you exactly when you will NOT have power supplied to your area so you can plan for and prepare your catastrophe response.

There is just one problem...
There is no app that predicts of power FAILURES !

The substation that feeds my area has antiquated switch-gear that was designed to be turned on and LEFT ON except in emergency. When the power is restored under a full load, the demand spike overloads the breakers and the power trips. This requires technicians to check the equipment for burnt contacts and to replace them, all before going through a re-activation protocol.

So we now have scheduled load-shedding of 2-4 hours at a time, interspersed with multiple unscheduled power failures of 4-10 hours at a time, depending on technician response time.
In the past three days, we have HAD power supplied for only around 12 hours...

Computer and network UPS batteries are all drained and have to be replaced. Electronics have been fried by power surges. But help is on the way... ESKOM will be replacing aged equipment soon... they just need a 33% INCREASE in electricity price to fund it!!

It's more of a gripe.

In my home town there's a section of Main Street of about 100 yards that has 7 different Barbers and 1 Unisex Hairdessers in it.

Some actually next door to each other.

There's a similar sized stretch of road where I live that has three different Auto Parts stores on it. Two of them are in the same retail strip building, the third is across the street.

We've pretty much got the same...two on one side, one on the other, all within 3 blocks.

RATS! I've got rats. I blame the neighbors from decades ago, who lived next door before I moved in. Apparently they didn't run much of a tight ship and there was some pest control to deal with...along with the Playboy Rabbit silhouette on their outside chimney.

Anyway, having chickens, more specifically their feed around is a bit encouraging, and I had to go to battle in my shed a couple of years ago. Thought it was all in the past, until I found some diggings in the floor of the attached greenhouse. Little buggers managed to get about 2 gallons of dirt/screenings through a small hole in the floor. I can imagine a small city under there by now. I've seen woodchucks move as much dirt....

So, as Bugs would say, "As you know, this means war!" All I had handy was a couple of bait/poison blocks, but working on other nefarious plans. Traps work great for mice, but rats are smart critters and either smarter than me (no comments...) or really don't care for peanut butter.

Apparently there are some pretty cool high tech devices with scent bait, and a CO2 cartridge-driven guillotine (dull) WITH A COUNTER (you'd think the pile of corpses would give a rough idea of success). All for $199. I think that's a hard pass (for now).

Careful, there Craig. My grandfather would trap squirrels and eat them ("You can take the boy out of the country...."). His neighbor posted a "SQUIRREL MURDERER" sign in her window facing his house. Not that it stopped him or anything.

In a more perfect world you could leave a bunch of scrap wire laying around and they could feast on that.

OTOH, if there are no witnesses....

Where there are chickens and chicken feed, there will always be rats.

All this talk about rat traps made me think it was time to check my traps. Mine are only for field mice and with the cold weather I seem to be getting more hits.

There are two places downstairs where I set traps and get a couple a week. Just now I checked the spot under the addition to the house that is just a crawl space. Sure enough there was one in a trap and it was pretty fresh as there was still some movement when I picked up the trap.

Hope it doesn't sound too cruel but as I had a good fire going in the wood stove I just tossed it in there. Figured that would be better than if I had not found it a day from now.

Other times I put the dead ones out on a stump in the yard. They are always gone the next morning. Have thought about putting a trail camera up when I do to see who or what I'm feeding!

It's slowing up around these parts. I get a regular harvest of a half-dozen deer mice every year. Tempted to try to seal the house better, but seeing as how they can get through an opening the size of my pinkie, I think it's futile trying.

My mother's house is brick on a fieldstone foundation and they still manage. She's not good with mousetraps for some reason, and I'd suggested she get more traps and get help setting the lot when she has help there. Last venture into her basement she had seven of them set up around the perimeter of the laundry room

The loss of Christine McVie. Also heard that Ian Gillan from Deep Purple lost his wife. I guess they are all getting older. Considering some of the excesses of the rock and roll lifestyle 79 is probably a good innings.

The other Dan Bates of the world can't seem to type their emails correctly in webforms, so I keep receiving their emails.

I'm currently dealing with a Daniel Bates in the UK who filed three complaints with the Health and Safety Executive office in the UK regarding a metal recycling plant. I've received the initial "we've received your complaint and will look into it" emails for them, as well as the "this isn't in our purview" or "this isn't going to be dealt with" emails. I'm sure he'd like to know about it, but I have no way of forwarding them to him. I tracked down what I thought was his work email, but he no longer works there.

Today I received an Order Confirmation, and later an Invoice for the order, for a Dan Bates in Brisbane, Australia. I have his phone number, which I tried to send a text message to, but it's a landline.

In the past, I've dealt with a college professor in Minnesota who would email assignments to me, a minister in Washington state whose reward points would come to my email, and one in Southern California whose family was trying to update him on things.

Oh, and I'd also get hotel and rental car receipts for a Dan Bates in the UK from when he'd travel to South Africa and India. Not sure if it's the same one I'm currently dealing with.

We recently lost Wilko Johnson.

Now that really pissed me off.

Upcoming service maintenance!

Am I going to be losing my roundels and mysterious badge after the reset. Will I come back as Max 6202? Inquiring minds want to know.

Fledermaus, a friend of mine has active moles, or something (I haven't seen anything). One exterminator told her to use PopRocks Bubblegum. He said they eat it 'cause it's sweet, then it explodes in their tummies and death ensues. It didn't work for the moles, but maybe the rats will fall for it. Available on Amazon.

You've uncovered my nefarious plot! But actually, I was just going to change your avatar to a picture of the invisible man.

Well played. I'm still hiding some of my superpowers. I blame them on reading too many comic books when I was a kid.

That's interesting. Wonder how rats take to it. From everything I've heard/seen they're pretty particular. They do seem to have taken to the bait blocks I picked up...went through 4 or so (I lost count, lol) so far, so either I have a bunch of them using it for dessert, it's going to blow up on them any moment now, or some super rats have evolved and they're immune to it...and all the bigger now.

My Power Company. For the last 3 years they have been badgering me to get a Smart Meter, which I have steadfastly declined.

Even after numerous emails and texts to tell me that they are in my area and they would like to book an appointment to fit one, I've declined.

A member of Customer Services even rang me to ask why I didn't want one but even after I explained why I wasn't interested the texts and emails didn't stop until a month ago when I received a different email encouraging me to send my meter readings on line, which of course I already do.

Just yesterday a different email arrived asking me to answer a survey titled " Your thoughts on Smart Meters".

I give up.

Eventually they will be forced to phase you out as the "smart" devices no longer require critical thought, and therefore companies do not require an experienced technician who could of serviced your analog meter. They save a few pennys by not having to pay an experienced employee, you join the "real" world where everything is "smart" and its all kumbaya.

But maybe thats just my grumpy opinion, founded in no resemblance of fact.

I'm curious as to why you are declining the Smart Meter.
(I'm not going to try to change your mind, or ridicule you, I'm genuinely curious about your reasons.)

I am firmly in the pro-SmartMeter camp. Sending around meter readers to read the digits is as quaint as the Milk Man delivering milk.
