The point is that the hardware is listening, but the irrelevant parts of the conversation are not being relayed across the internet. This is not the case for all voice assistants.

Probably not. I don't remember doing it when Siri first came out, and I know I haven't done it when upgrading phones.

So if I understand correctly, my iPad & iPhone are always listening for the phrase "hey Siri", and will only head to the internet in response to whatever query it hears after being activated by that phrase, if necessary to complete the request.

At the moment - perhaps...

The point is, *I* can't verify this, and it is entirely possible that the current privacy arrangements may change in the future.

No an absolute NO from me.

Completely fair. My perspective is different, because I was on the inside for so many years and because I know that there is a very strong pro-privacy attitude within the company.

In the US, anyway, and maybe elsewhere, one reason for smart meters is fewer employees. A computer reads my water meter, and if I top off the pool, quickly reminds me that I have used more than X gallons that day. Now I could wrap the wireless device attached to the meter with aluminum foil, but the computer would miss my signal and send one of the remaining employees out to rip it off.

Here they still have to come around and do a wireless meter check. They don't have to open up any manhole which is for me a relief.

Talking of which.

1997 BMW R1100RT 54,000 mile service at a local Independant BMW Shop £305.

2017 BMW K1600 24,000 mile service at a Motraad Dealer ( because you have to ) £1000.

Progress.

Even inflation adjusted between 1997 and 2017 that would only work out to £527.68.

So yeah ... progress.

Another early K1600 came in for a 24,000 mile service with Motraad for a tyre change and some diagnostic work. The bill was just under £3000.

Euro 4's are a lot better than Euro5's but still there's progress.

Both the RT and the K have exactly the same tank range.

Michael Buble Christmas Songs. They piss me off.

I go to the Coffee Shop and they are playing Michael Buble Christmas Songs.

I go to the Supermarket and they are playing Michael Buble Christmas Songs.

I drop in to catch up with a friend and Michael Buble is singing a Christmas Song on the Radio.

I've just got breakfast in a local eatery and yup, there he is on the PA crooning about Christmas in a way that only Michael Buble can because he's Michael bloody Buble.

Every year, Mrs. Shebalba will buy a few Christmas albums. Actual vinyl for our collection. Last year it was Dolly Parton. This year it was a Bing Crosby record and a Michael Buble record.

I do not understand why he has a record, let alone many. I do not see what makes him stand out enough to be successful at this level. I have nothing against the guy. He has a better voice then I do. There isn't anything original about his arrangements or his vocal style. People play the sh*t out of him from Thanksgiving to New Years though.

When chatting about this very topic with my wife the other night, she countered with, 'Well I don't think Katy Perry brings anything to the table, but she's popular.'

I also have no idea what people see in Katy Perry.

The fact that you can spend $860.00 for a service on a Porsche Taycan and all they will do is check the brakes and tyres then plug the battery into a PC.

Some people are resistant to servicing cars on schedule because you don't get anything physical to take home with them. Well apart from a bill of course and a stamp in a book but it's more about peace of mind than anything.

However when the car is in a workshop for less than an hour to charge that is ridiculous, even if it is a Porsche.

Microsoft Windows and the way it handles drivers for USB connected peripherals got to me today.
32 bit vs 64 bit. Win 7, Win 8, Win 10 and Win 11. All use more or less different USB drivers.
Windows then refuses to install drivers that Microsoft has not digitally cross certified. (I'm told Microsoft certification can cost as little as 250 dollars.) Windows will gleefully lie to you that the unsigned driver you have is not for the hardware you have, and refuse to install it. There are ways around that, but Microsoft keeps fixing those in every major update.

Perfect end to a week from Hell.

Feckin' COVID got me. After what, a couple of years of laying low, doing mostly the right stuff, it got me. Okay, I wasn't as obsessive as Mrs. f, but not reckless, either.... but I've heard enough stories by now.

Anyway, the illness isn't that bad, whether it's my immune system, being vaccinated, or my youthfulness at play, I would have assumed it was a cold and be hanging out with my mother and sister today (last chance rendezvous for the holidays).

But alas, after feeling sick, runny nose etc 2 days ago, Mrs f decided maybe I should take the day off (probably as she was off for the day and wanted company) and then decided I should do a COVID test. Seems I was a lot happier to see a positive test when we started our parenting adventure....anyway, I've been banished to the basement for now, with at least a cat for company. Room service isn't too bad at least. I get a little feeling about what the life of a leper was like. I've got internet, and videos to watch, just have to decide when I can return to polite society...or more importantly when Mrs. f decides to unlock the door.

Bummer Fledermaus. Covid got me in late June/early July. One week of suck, one more week of ick, and all got better.
I had a booster a couple of weeks ago, and didn't feel up to work the next day. Generally sore and crampy, maybe a bit more crabby than usual.... Laughing emoticon

Get well quickly.

So my hard disk crashes terminally, taking all my log-in cookies and password vault with it.

I try to recover my Gmail account e.g. XYZ @ gmail.com
My password is reset but I can't determine a new one yet.
So I try the verification "try another way".

I go through the whole cellphone verification process and click on the box for the verification code to be sent to my alternative recovery account e.g. XYZ @ hotmail.com
Google says: "We just sent an e-mail to XYZ @ hotmail.com"
Yipee!

Wait... wait... make coffee.
Wait... wait... nothing arrives.
Check hotmail spam folder and clean out the trash there while I wait some more...

I try the "try another way" verification again.
Cellphone verification (again) and end up with a notice from Google:
"We sent a verification code to XYZ @ Gmail.com. Check in 48 hours"

Question:
How do I access the account I am trying to recover, in order to get the verification code that I need to recover the account that I am trying to recover, in order to get the verification code that I need to recover the account that I am trying to recover...?

Are there actually any humans working at Google...?
Can I talk to one of them, PLEASE ?!?

(PS - it is raining here too, so I can't ride my Vespa either...)

I have absolutely no idea what that means.
NAS was a rapper in the 2000's.

He has his alarm set to play music when he wakes up, and it was playing a song from NAS, from his seminal album, "This is why I always run mirrors."

The cover art of that album had a Ferrari Testarossa wrapped with a mirror finish.

Does that help?

I was kidding, of course.

NAS = Network Attached Storage
The error message he was getting was a status update telling him that some of the parts of the drive in the NAS have gone bad. This could result in data loss.
The comment about "running mirrors" is essentially having backups of the backups. So his computer backs up to the NAS, and then a copy of that is made on one (or more) other external drives, so that he has redundant backups. That way, when one goes bad, he has one (or more) backups available.
