AT&T and probably any online so-called "customer support" these days. Livid emoticon

So, Monday, Mrs. Fledermaus and I were going to stream a public teevee program. No internet. We have AT&T DSL, about the best we can do in our semi-rural neighborhood. I get nominated to call customer service, as, somewhat ironically, she has an accent an either can't understand the usual accent of the support peeps, or they can't understand her.

So, I start with the waiting, as not surprisingly they're "assisting other customers." About 20 minutes in, a human voice. They first sell me on the app where I can solve these things myself, and send me a link. Then we wind up going through trying to find my service, which isn't exactly as I thought it was, so, I get transferred to another line, and....wait. Then more questions, most of them repeat of the original. We try some stuff, reset the router, plug, unplug ad infinitum. TWO HOURS later, they decide its a wonky router box, so they tell me they'll send me another if I wait patiently by the mailbox for 48 hours. Popcorn emoticon

Router arrives yesterday, I follow the instructions, get it all plugged in, and the broadband light is still blinking, no service. So, I play with my new phone app, which, it turns out is totally ineffective, and keeps telling me over and over to click a box which doesn't work. The chat box finally connects me to a human, who tells me to do all of the things I did on the old router...unplug, plug, reset, then once again, then a video chat where he gets to see the back of the router (I assume he didn't believe me that I knew where the connections go ). The a video of the wall jack, and asks me not once but THREE times if AT&T installed it or I did it myself. FINALLY, after a good hour and a half of having me chase my tail, he tells me I need a service person to come out and check it...and threatens me that it will cost $90 or something if he has to check my work and needs to correct it. He'll be by tomorrow. Oh, and when he's taking his time telling me this, the second line rings with what turns out to be a message that, indeed, the guy is coming tomorrow. But thank goodness for voicemail.

Anyway, things get better. Guy calls me 20 minutes early (I answer warily ready to battle a telemarketer or scammer which is the usual for unidentified calls these days), and my guy is parked outside. Says he's going to check out there first, which he does....then disappears. I'm thinking he maybe got scared off or something, but I think he was checking further down the road. He calls back, telling me he found the problem, and it was outside. Under 30 minutes start to finish. Facepalm emoticon

Looking at the back of the "new" router they sent us...dated 2019. Old one was 2020. Well, it works, for now.

People that completely ignore speed limits. I guess they're just suggestions? When did 70 mph start meaning 85+mph? Surely 35 mph means 55 mph.... To me, this leads to road rage. When someone is tailing me in a 35 zone and I'm already doing 40 (car, not scooter) bad things can happen....

You are very correct. Cell phones and "safety features" on cars have attributed to the lack of attention while driving.

Ive noticed a couple of things over here. Many more people blowing through Red lights with no real concern and people driving at 20 mph in suburban areas when the limit is 30. For no reason.

With tailgaiters I just get slower and slower and slower.

That's everybody here it seems - and if they do use them at all, it's as they start to make the turn, not 5-7 seconds beforehand, or before they stop before a left-hand (right-hand for UK) turn at lights.

It's somewhat amusing (in it's predictability) watching turns:

1. Start slowing down subtly
2. Ease off slightly toward the edge of the road
3. Start the actual turn
4. Engage turn signal during the turn

Brilliant!

If I see brake lights before the turn signal, the turn signal is useless.
And I almost always see the brake lights first....

you forgot "swing car halfway into the next lane over before the turn".

no idea where this dingleberry idea started for passenger cars. i used to drive a 40' bus and yes, when turning right we were taught to "set up" for the turn which includes getting close to the curb, then swinging out STAYING IN YOUR OWN LANE to get the rig around the corner.

but becky's altima (it's always a frickin altima) doesn't need to swing wide before a turn. they're just going to turn into the wrong lane anyway, so what's the point?

Thinking about it, all these people who can't use their blinkers properly - don't *they* get frustrated by others who refuse to indicate their intentions early enough so appropriate positioning can happen? So why on earth do they then carry on doing what they know full bloody well annoys all other drivers around them?

I have noticed this as well on different types of rentals. The hook price seems reasonable but then when you get to the nitty gritty of the actual scheduling the price always seems to jump regardless of whether I use a discount option.

We've had good luck with Sixt. The price you see when you're "shopping" on the site is the price you end up with when you check out. I snagged the app to do early check-in, and we end up going straight to the car, the keys are already in it, and we're good to go. No upselling, etc.

They aren't the cheapest option out there, but the cars are way nicer than the average kia/hyundai/altima and not having to deal with all the upselling and "extra fees" surprising you when you check out is worth it for us.

Motorcycle Insurance

Just had my renewal through, never had a claim in all my 37 years of riding
and yet again my renewal quote jumps right up.

Last year is was £185, they now want £255 so I now have to sit on the phone and waste time answering the same questions over and over again until one of the insurers gives me a quote for less than £200

I used to do all this online with comparison websites but none of them do multi bike policies anymore without ringing them up.

One of the few things that doesn't piss me off is motorcycle insurance.

I have three bikes with Markel and its $100 a year.

Now I have minimal insurance on the bikes but happy about low insurance bill. Motorcycle insurance is the only insurance that seems reasonable.

More and more these days being unhoused doesn't mean you are a total screw up.

I watch business news a lot and it looks like there are a lot more people in Britain fixxin to be homeless/unhoused in the not too distant future.

I generally don't give money or time of day to panhandlers myself. They can be pretty annoying and even a little bit intimidating.

And I just don't think it helps. They may very well be happy for a minute and appreciate whatever they get but it doesn't help.

Yep. Better by far to give money to a charity that helps the unhoused/homeless/street sleepers. e.g. Shelter in the UK:

My daughter left home at 19. She wound up homeless for a period of a few years. All by choice. And she came from a good home. Possibly on the spoiled end of the curve, truth be known.

I met a lot of the "housing challenged" group that were her peers, and even after she heard from them, "You don't belong here ... go home." she still didn't.

It's not all that way, but there is a significant portion of those who are on the streets that are there because they don't want to put forth the effort to not be.

I have given to people who need help, but it generally is not the person that's been standing on the same corner for the last two years smoking a cigarette and holding a cardboard sign bemoaning their situation. It may sound callous, but for the past several years jobs have been over-abundant here. Many of those out there simply don't want to follow rules or have responsibility. I have talked to them and seen it firsthand.

And to qualify that, I know it isn't always the case. For those, there are the aforementioned charities that help the ones who really want to get back on their feet.

I'll support Jim's suggestion with one caviat and that's the knowledge that if you give to charity, even though the cause is noble you may end up paying someone's wages where around 60% of the money you gave could go to running the organisation and not get through to the individuals concerned.

I don't give money to people asking for it because I know I'm being played and I won't be guilted into giving to make myself feel better no matter how tragic your story is.

I'm not responsible for where you are today and I can't fix you. That's your job.

I know this deviates from the OP, but just riffing on a theme. I have given to a few people who stand out.

Not begging, but street performers in Portland Ore. There was a pair of guys, one on guitar and one on fiddle, playing and screaming at the top of their lungs. Out of tune and loud. I gave them five bucks and they gave me one of their CDs. It's truly awful. Money well spent.

Another guy named Michael who is a local and the story is too long to post here. Michael rides a bike and picks up cans but I have seen him go out of his way to help out other people including myself. It's a super story I'd be happy to share, but long. The last time I saw him we had a conversation about my Stella and I paid the $3.00 fee to grab him a twenty out of the gas station ATM. That's what I think of Michael.

I turned around and went back specifically to give money to an older guy that was standing out on the corner near the mall in the cold playing violin. Not fiddle .. violin. You could tell the guy had some training. I gave him ten bucks.

There was a young couple sitting by the bus stop near our street as I was on my way out one day. Dude looked like a young Bob Geldof with big messy hair and this crazy striped jacket and his girlfriend looked like a hippy. They had a sign that read "Going to Texas. Hungry." I drove to the Subway nearby and bough two sandwiches back. He hugged me and she cried.

So, I guess I just go with my gut. I mean, I'd like to help everyone, but you just can't. But when you know, you just really know, you know?
