I have been doing further research into the life of my Grandfather Ernest Day (1888-1975) and his service in the First World War.

(I have recently found out I have been chosen in a ballot to march to commemorate the event in November) https://armistice100.org.uk

Even my father knew little of his service as, like many of his countrymen, my Grandfather spoke little of the experiences he had. There is little doubt though given his changed personality after the war that he had been severely affected by PTSD.

Imagine my surprise when I found out he had served in France and Belgium from Sept 1915 until the end of the war, taking part in some of the worst battles there including those centred around the Somme and Ypres.

I had been struggling to find photographs of him until recently when this one turned up in some of my late fathers papers.

My grandfather is sat in the sidecar.

It's a Douglas - video of one here:

Great photo. Now you can get to work sorting out the identity of each medal. Family histories are a great thing, and the more information you can assemble and pass on, the better.

Oh that one is easy - my Dad had them passed on to him.

My brother has the originals and I have the copies my Dad used to wear on parades.

This is his medal card. Interestingly many WW1 medal cards were destroyed in London bombing in WW2 - (out of 6.5 million documents only 1.25 million have been saved Crying or Very sad emoticon)

see https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/the-1940-fire-at-arnside-street/

- his survived.
