Hello, I've got three more payments on my GTS-250ie and she's all mine
let me start at the begining, I was in a store and when I came out my wheels was gone on my 21 speed mountain bike!! this happen in March-06
and that's when I got the idea about a scooter, never rode one before, didn't have a license are anything. So I went On-line and did some research and I said to myself "You might as well get the biggest and the best" And that when I first seen a Vespa, I seen them around but did'nt
know they was the BEST!!, and this took me a month or so to find out.
And that's when I seen the price and I had to have it!! I E-mail Jennifer
of SF Vespa and she took pitty on me and let me pay down on it THANK-YOU JENNIFER!!! and now after 11 payments I got Three more to go and
she's ALL MINE!! I took my MSF class and passed it on the first try!
And since I found MV I know more about my GTS-250ie THANK- YOU
So if you see a cool looking Blackman on a Black GTS riding on the 101
and you wrote on this page you should be very PROUD of yourselfs because it was all you THANK-YOU and safe riding PEACE!!

I'm with you there, wanting the biggest and best. Always though scooters were cool, since I was a kid. And Vespa is THE scooter. Something inside just said it's time. Enjoy the ride!!

I am somewhat confused by the "pay down on it" reference. Did they let you take the scooter and make payments on it or are they holding the scooter until it is paid for?

Jennifer really didn't do you any favors. They have had the use of your money, interest free, for almost a year. They had absolutely no risk because they had the collateral. Nothing was in your name. Bet your arse that they didn't "set aside" a particular scooter for you. When you have paid them the full price, hopefully they will give you the model and color scooter you wanted. I certainly hope they didn't charge you any interest or fees because they didn't give you a loan. Never heard of such an arrangement.

If you had put that money in the bank every month and then drawn it out when you had enough, at least you would have made interest on it.

Sorry if you were offended. I would bet that I was not the first one to think the arrangement was strange. This is a case of a dealer taking advantage of a customer, if it is as he said. If they will take his money for a year and do nothing in return, what else would they do?

His bubble is intact because he will be getting his scooter soon.

Lay-away plans are quite common for people who can't get - or don't want - credit. Generally there are no interest fees, sometimes a small service charge for keeping an item set aside instead of selling it.

I have never heard of it in the vehicle world, but in clothing or accessories retail, furniture and appliance, etc. it was very common. Since the advent of "rent-to-own" plans, I think lay-away is less common.

By the way - don't let anything take away the pleasure of anticipation of your scooter. It makes the ownership so much sweeter when you've had to wait and work for it. Sometimes those of us with enough credit to hang ourselves forget that instant gratification can get pretty hollow.

True. I remember when Lay-away was very common and many people used it for Christmas shopping. However, Lay-away had a real storage area with assigned shelves. Usually, there was a counter in front of a secure area and you brought your selections to the desk and were assigned a claim check. A deposit was required and items had to be redeemed usually not longer than 90 days, or they went back in stock and you lost what you had already paid.

A vehicle has a floor plan figure that starts to cost the dealer interest for having it in stock. It is extremely unlikely that a vehicle would be pulled from the sales floor, set aside and allowed to be paid for over the course of a year. Dealers are not in business to take a year to make their margin. I maintain that the dealer in question just took the payments and will pull a scooter from stock when the bill is paid.

It's probably true that a scooter wasn't set aside. As long as that is what was agreed to, I don't see that as being a real problem.

If there was a very specific scooter I wanted - limited edition or something like that - and I didn't have credit, I might be willing to pay a little extra to have it set aside. In that case, the dealer would be doing me a favour just because it would be a real pain in the rear for them to deal with.

If I just wanted any scooter, I would likely try to save up the money myself (as you mentioned) and then pay cash once I had it. But - to each his own.
