Elena arrived this morning ending the long shipping tale.
https://modernvespa.com/forum/post2271145#2271145
She is everything V oodoo said she would be. An honest 54 year old lady that wears her past with grace.
After looking her over I turned the fuel tap to reserve, pulled the choke and see was alive on the second kick
Going to air up the tires, fill the tank, check a brake light that doesn't work and go for a ride around the neighborhood.
Over the next few days I'll begin to add the parts that have been arriving often.

She looks quite happy! But she promised that she'd start on one kick if she could and I'm sure she tried.... Regardless, a good ending and standing by for some rolling shots and first impressions.

Spent a couple of hours getting to know her. Removed the pillion pad and installed my small Kriga bag i use of t like a glovebox installed a borrowed leggy mirror that will not work for me so I'll install the brackets V oodoo sent along in the box of goodies. Tomorrow morning I'll pull and paint the pipe and swap the rear tire for the new spare rim with the new SL 26 mounted.
Then start to refinish the rim so I can mount a new tire on the front and be rolling on new rubber
Whipped up the stand while i was waiting for her to arrive.
She is an absolute ball to ride. Went over the rough road along the lake and she just floated along. The Genuine I had a couple of years ago would just about loosen your fillings.

Whoo-woo, Elena!! Yes, she's mature, but still quite a head turner. Happy she finally arrived and is settling in to her new home. I'm sure you'll treat the lady right.

Who picked out the name, you or V oodoo? It's pretty. Congrats!!

To answer the questions.
PureDrivenSnow. All scooters and cycles at this house have always been "the other woman" both in time and cost. Just seems right to name them.

nomadinsiam. The seat is good for me it will go off to Cheeky Seats for a cover later this week and I will use the spare till it returns.

Kimono 32. Name from a google search. Greek origin means light torch bright
Seemed appropriate as that is how she makes feel and is also a nod to
V oodoo's part time residence

V oodoo in response to your PM. How was ride. Very interesting smooth good power uphill.

How far. About 6 miles need a better mirror to feel safe

How fast don't know. The speedo dances like crazy. Have new cable will use gps in iPhone next ride

Any surprises. Really flat off idle and up to ¼ throttle died at stop signs.
Will pull plug and change. Install CHT gauge and will need to adjust carb once I figure which screws to turn. Front brake squeaks like crazy but stops. Have new shoes that i will change and sand drum when I change front wheel. Some of the issue is probably new operator error. Haven't t ridden a 2 stroke in 40 years and they were off road dirt bikes where the throttled was twisted full on most of the time
Videos. Later today

How does she compare to other scoots. So much fun. Makes the Buddy and the GTS seem as exciting as a toaster. Glad they are both gone.

I have a question what size rubber bumpers does the engine side door take all of mine are gone.

Changed the rear wheel took about 15 min total which included set up and pipe removal.
Installed spare carrier
Pulled plug and found broken cap and black oily plug.
Fresh plug new cap one kick start seems to idle fine and rev well
Will ride tomorrow after painting and reinstalling pipe. There are no springs on the pipe. So I need to source them.
So far no real surprises

V oodoo
Do have a new speedo cable. That will have to wait till next week. Using the second mirror mount you sent for the ram mount will use iPhone app for speedo till then

Spent some more time on Elena today. Found that one of the POs must have over tightened the rear bolt on the rack/tank as they had welded the bolt head to the rack. I dremeled it off and the nut and washer fell on the ground. There was enough material to tap it out to m8 and blue loctite it.
Primed painted and reinstalled the pipe.
Have her a good bath and went for a short ride. Still having some low throttle issues. Feels like she is rich on the bottom end. Will look into that tomorrow.
Maybe the carb needs to come and go thru my friends ultrasonic cleaner.

Looking quite good, but I think you want to flip that mirror mount over so it points out more, like the other one. The muff looks spiffy, like new now. Play w/ the mixture screw on the carb. It may be jetted a bit rich. You can find sets of 10 assorted jets reasonably priced at http://www.jet200.com/catalog/

V oodoo thanks for the jet link and the good catch on the mirror.
Spent today sorting thru some little things. Flipped the mirror bracket and ended up needing to bend the mirror stem to get enough adjustment.
Swapped out the spare seat I got from V oodoo and will ship the other (better one) off to Cheeky Seats tomorrow
Made up a license bracket from some aluminum flat stock and sheet metal I had. License should be here soon as the DOT lost my application for the collector plate. It never transferred from the title office to the plate office. Finally talked with someone on Friday who processed the application.
Found and ordered some blind rivet nuts on amazon to do the tank bolt repair. Minimum order 25 so if any of you need to do 6mm repairs I'll mail them to you. Found a DIY install tool video on you tube.
Took the old rear wheel apart and it is in a white vinegar bath to dissolve the rust. (Thanks to qascooter for the tip) will do a thread on the process when they are refished.
Spent some wet sanding polishing and waxing the left rear. It came up really well.
Will dig into the carb tomorrow.
Also need to get the tail light brake light sorted before I venture much out of the neighborhood
I want to put a hidden switch wired into the kill switch. Would appreciate any ideas.

Going to have Gickspeed in Indianapolis go thru it over the winter.
I know V oodoo I should learn to do it myself but getting the tools to do it right plus the downtime during riding season doesn't work for me. I have plenty to do with suspension cables and redoing the wheels to keep me busy Nerd emoticon

Had some time today so I did a few things on Elena. Turned the mixture screw in about ¼ turn and it seemed to help a lot will have to go for a longer run to be sure. Yesterday when I was riding up a longs hill she seemed to run out of gas. There is about ¾ tank so that's not the problem. The vent in the tank is clear and I blew thru it with the compressor so it should be fine.
The blind rivet nuts came today so When I looked at taking the tank out noticed that the fuel line has a drop in it before it runs back up to the carb. Have read that they are sensitive to fuel line length and since I have a quick release valve to install I can shorten it then. Need guidance on how long.
Think the tail/brake light issue is solved. Tail light bulb was burned out and apears brake light switch is stuck on. Will drop the switch tomorrow free it up and clean and diaelctric grease the contacts. Install s a new 5w tail light bulb and greased contacts. Works fine goes on and off with the bar switch. No pilot light so will pull headlight tomorrow. Have a NOS one from V oodoo with a shiny new reflector. Wanted to wait until halogen bulbs were off of backorder bu want all the electrics to work.
Sanded out all of the touch up high spots on the cowls. Cut thru to the primer in places then buffed and waxed. Really prefer the honesty of the look to the touched up look.
Lots to learn and it's coming slowly really joying having her.

Do you have a later than 1965 engine fitted? The spigot diameter of a 100 Sport cylinder (or any other 1966-on) will not fit in the early cases. I don't think there is enough meat on the 100 cylinder spigot to safely turn down to fit.

And also, the 100 Sport had a 19mm carburetor with a much larger air filter. You have a 16mm with a super skinny air filter.

Also, when you start dreaming of a 4 speed, that stuff won't fit either.

FYI.

P.S. The original setup for the rear "carrier" "bolt" was a 7mm stud spot-welded to the carrier, with the washer and nut installed underneath. No need for "blind rivet nuts".

Also FYI.

Very nice. Doing some lovely work.

I have some idea that certain older models have brake light switches that are short and open to switch on. Just saying in case yours is one of them.

Brake switch is indeed short to off. Drop brake pedal, disassemble switch, clean "flag" contacts.

What Halogen headlamp bulb are you intending to use? 6V 25/25W is not common in Halogen. You need to keep the lighting system balanced.

25/25w headlamp, 5W pilot, 5W tail, 10W brake. The lighting system is balanced with these wattages.

You really can't deviate from these values, the lighting coils will not support a 35/35W headlamp bulb.

The owner's manual, as well as the service station manual are available on scooterhelp dot com.

And yes, you have a nice early 90, I've had a bunch of them. They do have limitations if you want to go beyond stock. I have one with a tuned 100 Sport motor converted to 4 speed, with a later 50 Special front end. It's one of my favorite 45-50 mph town bikes. I also have a "blueprinted" stock early 90, still 3 speed, and it is a great neighborhood bike, but not safe on 45+ mph roads.

1964 V90 with 4 speed 100 Sport motor, LeoVince pipe, 50 Special front end, etc. It had a bent fork and blown up motor, so what you do with what you've got.

Thanks for the info on the brake switch. It should be simple enough to sort.
This is the bulb I am waiting to come off of backorder. http://www.scootermercato.com/Scooter-Parts/Bulbs/B6HLHAL It's 25W.
V oodoo installed a SHB 19/19 before I bought it. He also added the pipe.
I had a250 GTS for a while and found it to just not right for the around town riding I do. Sold it on. Bought this because I no longer ride far or fast and I like working on things.
Both Mr Hodge and Jonathan Gick have built successful small spigot motors with 100 sport top ends turned down to fit. Jonathan is building mine.

When I saw that you mentioned in an above post thay you were having GickSpeed work over the engine this winter, I thought "This exmayor cat is doing it up right"! I've been checking out some of GickSpeeds work and it is fine work indeed! Good job!

Good to know on the 25/25 halogen bulb and that you can get a 100 cylinder turned to fit.. the 100 Sport cylinder is a nice little unit, especially with some port matching and a bit of exhaust port work.

Your other limitation is that the early 90 uses a bushing rather than a needle bearing on the small end of the connecting rod, and the inlet timing is much less than a proper 100 Sport crankshaft.

Think of a 100 Sport as a 3 speed version of a 90SS with a 3rd transfer port.

Have fun on it.

There is a Pinasco crank with the large needle bearing rod small end going in to match the larger wrist pin in the 100 sport piston.
Thank you for all the info. I had five weeks waiting to get the shipper situation sorted so had time o sort thru the limitations and reasonable upgrades.
I really wanted an early small frame and I believe in the end she will be just what I am after.
If I still wanted fast i would have kept the Ducati Monster i sold on three years ago
The economics of this make no sense but I'm 73 and since I only have one scooter I can be as stupid as I please.
It's already going to my younger son when I'm gone so resale and value don't factor in at all
Since I don't smoke, drink, hunt or fish there is enough entertainment $s to have some fun
V oodoo put a very solid right side kickstand on her. It is really stable. With all the things I'm working I decided a centerstand is a better solution for now. I can do some little things without having to strap her onto the chock/stand. The sidestand will go back on in the spring.

A little progress and lots of electrical gremlins today. Changed the front brake lever and cable. Easy job with fourth hand tool.
Got some springs for the pipe. They were long but cut them down 10mm and they work fine.
Decided to install the NOS headlight and see if the tail and pilot lights would get going.
First thing was the new bulb holder which has mini slip on connectors while Elena has bullet connectors. Decided to use the original holder whuch was slightly larger than the opening in the new light. A little grinding on Elena's holder with the dremel solved the issue.
While everything was opened up thought I would tru and get the pilot and tail lights going. Polished the contacts used dielectric grease and they both worked for a minute or so. Turned the switch on and off and they quit.
Need to get into the switch but there is a rivet or pin in the bottom holding the cover on that needs to come out. Don't want to damage the switch so need an idea how to remove it

Nice work there, she's getting the love she needs. Switch cover just pops off, look for the pry slots in the ends. Then one small screw holds the switch, don't lose it, they're the devil to find.

While the front wheel was off thought it was a good idea to check the front brake. It looked really good and the inside if the drum was very clean. Gave them both a light sand and wipe down and put it back together.
The wiring issue with the pilot light and tail light was far less successful. Loosened the switch from the bar and found no loose connections. Gave it, the tail and brake light holders and headlight bulb holder a couple of good baths with contact cleaner. Everything was shining clean so fired her up and checked. Still doesn't work
I'll wait till I take her over to my friends and put her up on the lift to see if I can sort it out. It can't be too hard. There are not that many circuits The high/low beams work, the horn works, it runs and the brake light works though the switch is stuck on (another project for up on the lift. Could be a broken wire or something causing an open circuit. Will run continuity tests on the wires and if that's ok then will probably need to replace the switch.
I think I'll ride her around the neighborhood tomorrow then take her over and put he up on the lift for a couple of days since they are calling for rain.

One down one to go. The hub and lug bolts will get cleaned and painted at a later date.

Only chasing two wires I have two different wiring diagrams one doesn’t show power to the pilot light and this doesn’t show power to the tail light the wires are there
