I have a situation that I haven't been able to find information on. My ET4 key broke (Metal part separated from the transponder part). I used it that way for a while but now have lost the metal part.
What would it take to get a new key cut? Is the appropriate information within the transponder or would the ignition switch or some other part have to be used to have a full new key cut?

Thank you!

Step one to getting a new key programmed into ECU, Use Red/Brown master key to program new key.

If you don't have master, you are screwed and get to buy new ignition w/keys and new ECU.

There are a few dealers that can reset some ECU to virgin, but not sure if the ET is one that can be reset.

I just need a new key cut, and the transponder cloned onto it.

The mechanical key code is not in the transponder. There a plastic Code Card (the size of a credit card) with a 4 digit number that has the mechanical key code. If you don't have that card, just the number really, then a key will need to be fit, or the locks replaced.

ET4 has a seat lock, right? If you can get it open, then take the lock to a locksmith and have a key made. Or take the whole scoot. Or pay for a service call.

Yes, but you lost the transponder ("the metal part") so simply cloning the key transponder is no longer an option for you. Now you're gonna have to do what WEB-Tech described or send in your CDI so the codes can be extracted, which ScooterWest does: https://www.scooterwest.com/extract-codes-from-cdi-cut-2-keys-carburated-models.html

I remembered reading in a post somewhere that the key cutting code was available somewhere other than the card (which I also don't have) but may have mis-remembered that.
Is the famous key guy, Jimh still around? Or would Scooterwest be the place to go for key cloning?

To clarify what I mean by "The metal part". I'd expect that anyone who cuts keys could make what I'm missing. The plan is then to send both parts off to be made into a new and complete key (Since it seems the key cutting data isn't available re the card being gone). Sorry if I've been unclear.

Lucky you, take your seat lock out, take to a locksmith with your new key. He can open the lock and get the code to cut your new key. But then you still may need to send that off to be clones from what you have left of your key.

Call AF1 Racing in Austin, Closer to you so fast turn around.
Ask if they can clone a key if you have just the transponder not the key itself.

For less than the cost of all these great ideas that don't fix the problem, just kick it down the road to be resolved at a later date, you can get a jailbreak cdi and use whatever key you like.

To the best of my knowledge, no locksmith in the US can clone a Vespa key with that card that is included with Piaggio scooters. I presume it can be used in Europe to order a replacement key - or maybe it is just one of life's little mysteries.

Many locksmiths can create a MECHANICAL key from the code card. The basic lock and key system, and the associated code series, dates back to 1988. It was used in Fiat/Lancia cars before modern Vespas.

This key will turn the locks but, if you have an immobilizer, it won't start the scoot. This is true on either side of "the pond".

I've only got the head of the blue key. The bike came without the red key or code card.

The best (cheapest!) solution was given above. Open the seat (read the solutions for opening an LX seat), remove the lock cylinder, and get a locksmith to make a new key to fit this using a *clone-able* blank. Then clone this new key to your existing RFID transponder in the blue stub you still have.

Is JimH/Jim From Maine still active? He doesn't seem to have posted here in a few years and I haven't gotten a reply to the email I sent him almost 2 weeks ago.

No, he's not still active.

Any competent auto locksmith should be able to do this task - or contact AF1racing to ask their advice.

AF1 Racing in Austin is your best bet.
