Nobody seems to be safe. We are always 1-2 safest large cities in USA per FBI. Nothing remotely close to this has ever happened here.

Our family is safe, all of our kids and their friends frequented this wonderful place when they were a little younger, we already have a connection to the shooter and one unaccounted for.

My Son Jordan heard the shots from his home.

A few minutes after I saw this story this morning, a college friend posted about it. We both were gutted. It reminded us of the hang out we'd all go to after our weekly Fraternity/Sorority meetings and those get together after midterms/finals.

For the 12 who lost their lives, I pray for them and their families. Though I have some anger towards the perpetrator, I'm including him and his family in my prayers as well. This wasn't needed and is horrible for the 12 families and all of the others that their lives will forever be changed after last night.

Hate to say
No one is safe. Anywhere. We seem to have a segment of our population that has abandoned all human decency, attacking defenseless victims without cause.
In many cases they have a history of violence, that has ignored. And the police are helpless, at least initially, to provide protection.

I've grown leery of large public gatherings, try to be located near a wall and an exit. And keep an eye on any new arrivals.

While the incidence of such violence is actually small, in the scheme of things, it only has to happen once. Functionally, a careless driver is much more likely to be the cause of my demise.

I hate these sort of attacks.

No known motive and a VET makes me wonder about some sort of PTSD. We really need better mental health services both for our military vets and others. Too many of these tragedies seem to stem from mental health issues.

My condolences to everyone affected.

I won't mention that 3 letter word.

We need better mental health screening, and people and laws ballsy enough to force someone to get help.

My condolences to any and all affected.

Actually after listening to the news of it this morning, you were the first person I thought of.

Gut-wrenching for those involved. Per the PTSD comment, it crossed my mind as well. Can't assume that, but question it. We've had a PTSD related shooting in our small city in recent years, a veteran killing a police officer/veteran in a standoff.

Thought of y'all when I heard this story, as well.

And then of everyone I know who died the same way, because yes, no one is safe -- in our own otherwise crime free small town we've had two mass shootings in the past dozen years, the second of which took one of my closest friends and then our neighbor's father.

In total six of my friends -- including as well one of my students, a close childhood friend, and my brother's college roommate -- have been shot and killed.

None were otherwise at all involved in crime of any sort.

It seems a lot of these individuals did time in the military and have seen action. PTSD is a very real thing though I'm not acting that's the case here. This shit has to stop though.

Oh, so sorry for his family. I honestly won't let myself imagine that kind of loss, and am afraid most of the victims are young, which only deepens the tragedy.

As someone in the mental health field I certainly agree that better services are needed, particularly for vulnerable populations such as our vets.

I wouldn't want to see the violence problem in this country reduced to this, however. There are many factors and it would be a mistake to stigmatize those among us with mental illness, the vast majority of whom have no more propensity to violence than anyone else.

I disagree strongly. This is a really important topic that needs to be talked about. Nothing's going to change if it's not put on the table and discussed. The cycle will simply keep repeating itself as it has for decades.

To lock it and hope that something's going to magically change is just another form of denial.

I do have something to say because I deal with complex PTSD everyday and I care about others. To shut discussions like this down really doesn't help anyone.

Any ideas on how to improve the help and treatment available?

In your eyes, what are some of the shortcomings of the system already available?

I agree with you. My point is that certain discussions that are relevant to this cannot be discussed on this site and the posts pulled. This makes it very difficult to have an open discussion. I understand politics is frowned up on MV and that's fine. However once posts are removed from threads that mention the G word where it is relevant the thread should just be locked. It is tragic what happened and PTSD is real. Perhaps there is a better place on the internet for that discussion to happen.

I agree we should not hijack his thread.

As much as I'd like to have the discussion about what the problem areas are, and my opinion of what any "fix", is, any discussion would lead into discussing guns, which is against forum rules and we must respect that. That discussion always leads to shouting and hard feelings. I'm not one to avoid discussions, but there are other places we can go to, to shout about mental health, the second amendment, etc.
