I've read thru the postings I could find on this trip and am interested. The Vespa Trip has released the schedule and cost for the 2019 trips and registration opens soon.

So is anyone considering doing this trip in 2019? If so, it would be fun to get a group of MV'rs on the same trip.

Any additional insights from people have done this trip in the past would be most welcome!

Considering it but not sure that 2019 will work out with two other trips already planned including a trans Panama Canal Cruise.

Though frankly after being on the Amalfi coast last May I'd far rather do Tuscany or Sicily because the traffic even pre peak tourist season was insane, At curves on the coasts buses would have to stop, back at an angle, pull forward then sometimes back again. While another bus stopped oncoming traffic then would repeat the maneuver on their side of the road while the next bus or lorry held traffic for them to do it. Even scooters were having trouble filtering through the dense traffic, narrow roads and almost no turnouts to let slower traffic pull over.

Beautiful? Yes, but if I ever go back it will be by train or better yet by boat.

The Almafi coast is beautiful but the scheduled dates are the peak of the season and I agree with others the traffic would be horrible. That said, the people running the tours know this also so maybe they have a plan. I would ask them.

We did the Amalfi coast. It was a good day trip around, with a few stops. A tour lasting more than a day? I can't see a group ever sticking together on those roads with that sort of traffic.

Be warned in that part of Italy it's going to be hot. I've spent a lot of time in Italy in the late June time frame (July and August will be even hotter), on motorcycles as I have 15 year tradition of doing a 1 week motorcycle tour in Europe with a German buddy. It can easily reach 40C during the day in Tuscany or on the Amalfi coast, Sicily could be even hotter. To me there is a temperature, which varies depending on humidity, where it stops being fun. For me the cut-off is somewhere in the 35C area. Don't get me wrong this is beautiful part of the world but July and August are really hot and crowded. This is also the peak of the vacation season in Europe. You're much better off up in the Alps that time of year. Still crowded but not so hot.

I'm thinking about the Sicily trip. We went there in 2013 for my son's college graduation present. Trapani, Menfi, Castellamre del Golfo are just beautiful. We went in late May, traffic wasn't too bad. And yes, it will be hot. However, my wife and I will be in Tuscany for three months staring in July so this looks like an interesting side trip.

We did Sicily this year with them - it was a fantastic holiday. My wife and I, two up on a brand new 125CC Primavera,

We are fancying the Amalfi coast trip next year.

If you are ok riding with busy city / town traffic, you'll be ok. If you're inexperienced, then maybe it's not quite as suitable. ( I have ridden in London quite often). The Italian drivers treat scooterists and all other drivers with contempt. The majority if skill levels is low, and they constantly want to overtake, and when they do, give little room and cut in. you need to be very aware, and dominate your lane if you have to. Town and city riding is only a very small part of the trip though.

The percentage of riding through towns is low - and the planners seem to find the roads with fewer vehicles on them.

Sicily in July was indeed hot as hell - but I wouldn't want it any other way.

The possibility of riding in a large group is there, with differing skills. We had only 5 scooters in our group - and we were all experienced - which made for good progress. Riding in larger groups presents different challenges, and I personally think is more dangerous.

I'd do another trip in a heartbeat.

Tim

Thanks for the information about Sicily. I've driven autos in Palermo, Trapani and Siracusa -- not for the faint of heart initially. However, you soon realize the style of driving isn't that dissimilar to what you will get in Manhattan or D.C., the "foreigness" just makes it seem more different than it really is. Over the years, I think I've become slightly accustomed to the Italian driving style. The only thing i've never understood, but have come to anticipate, is the passing on blind curves.

Mama Mia - Bella Italia
As previously posted, I had the good fortune to live in Italy for four years.
Italians do drive with great gusto. Any of these scooter adventures would
be a memorable thrill.

Besides zipping up to Rome on the weekends to try and meet USA girls
backpacking as tourists, the next most popular destination on my Ducati was the Amalfi Coast. The traffic, even back then, was congested. It was easy to
zip around on two wheels.

Hey, Happy Turkey Day to Everyone.
