Yesterday was 14 and I managed to start the ZNEN. No riding because of the snow and ice. Today we're supposed to get around 12" of snow and Wednesday we'll have a high of 0°F with wind chills of -30°.
I guess I won't be riding. |

bike goes into hibernation for the winter...i.e. battery is out and it doesn't go back in until we get a good rain storm to wash out the salt and sand...i'd say 45F+ is ok and i'd be more apt to ride if the sun is out and it's dry...i like to enjoy it so if i have to put on a bunch of clothes and my teeth are chattering i'm probably just going to drive...was the same when riding motorcycles...although with motorcycles i had a too hot to ride temp as well since the engine is right under you not behind you in the swingarm...i didn't want to sit on a heater in the humid summer weather and end up with swamp a$$...i'm sure it won't be as bad in the heat on a scooter

My coldest this year is about -17 C I think. I don't mind the cold, it really is not bad with the right gear. It's the snow that has been keeping me off the road, worst year in a while for snow after what started as a pretty tame winter. Anyway I've taken measures so that wont be an issue next year.

No riding for a few days Can't wait for the Ural when I can laugh at this and get on the bike for a ride. I'd love to get my hands on a 150 CC beater and try this stuff though.
*EDIT* My favourite winter riding pic I've found online. |

Well, I THOUGHT my answer here was gonna be down to 40 at the lowest. Thinking, I live in a "moderate" climate, no need to be a tough guy just to get the scoot out of the garage, enough days over 40 to ride, and plenty of other things to do.
But today I tried to go by the hourly forecast, had to go watch my kid's dance rehearsal, thinking I'd be riding in the mid 40s. So bundled up with double gloves and my new neck warmer, got there and checked my phone: 36. Oops. But it was ok, really. Just a hassle bundling up that much, for this former SoCal/AZ guy. So I guess mid 30s it is! |

As per usual with a couple of days of warm, aka above freezing highs the roads were almost clear enough of ice to go out. So today the winds are blowing 17mph with gusts of up to 40 giving a serious wind chill with snow forecast to begin again soon. Think its a day to stay inside and watch the superbowl.

Last week it was over 14" of snow and wind chills near -40º. This past weekend it was in the 40s and almost e everything melted. Our drive and walks were clear and dry and the roads weren't far behind.
This morning I woke up to everything being covered with a fresh sheen of ice. There just is no planning this year. |

I made a liquor store run (3 miles round trip) with temps in the 40s. I will not do that again.

So, this morning I tried to ride in around 30 degrees Fahrenheit (About -1.1 Celsius). Discovered that I "thought" I had the right gear for cold weather riding. I was wrong! My upper body was okay as I had 3 layers on, my neck warmer. But discovered my 3/4 helmet LEAKS air around the shield. I am near sighted and have to wear glasses so the shield completely closed fogged up. I had to click it open 1 level and my face HATED the swirling wind effect.
I had on a second layer under my jeans but it barely helped. I have winter gloves (Thank you inlaws for the Gift!) They help me when I walk the dogs in the morning but aren't winter riding gloves and DID NOT help. Good to know but it SUCKED!!! So I guess when it drops below 40 degrees (4 Celsius) I won't ride until I get proper gear. |

It's been around 22°F in the morning yesterday and today, and barely above freezing in the evening, so I carpooled with my wife. Even with heated gloves, a thermoscud, and other winter gear, that's still too damn cold for me. Weather like this is why I moved from Wisconsin in the first place.

The coldest day here so far in Philadelphia was 18F (-8C) but with the wind chill it was waaaaay colder! I have a 20 minute ride to work but I felt fine with appropriate gear. I am originally from Montreal so I am used to cold plus riding the scooter in the winter reminds me of the snowmobiling of my youth. Good times!

Might break my own record tonight (22°F). Will let y'all know later...still in Gotham for another hour before catching my train.
(UPDATE: Nah...'twas 25 when my train pulled in. Like I'd know the difference. (No wind, thankfully.) When you put on helmet and gloves *before* getting off the train...

In Breckenridge we have had 80" of snow in the last week. Sort of ironic since last Thursday the roads were clear of ice and I was seriously considering airing up the tires and unplugging the battery tender before the snow started.
Solved the problem of getting out for a ride by flying to Houston for a wedding. So got out today on my husband's red Vespa to do a little shopping for the wedding. Though I'd almost prefer the cold to the humidity outside right now. |

I've been riding through winters for like 6-7 years. Coldest temperatures been -15F. It's all about equipment, and I got em since I've been trekking mountains during winter.
Spiked wheels a must on snowy/icy roads. TBH I feel more safe on scooter 2 wheels than walking the icy pavements! |
