I see images online of Vespa rust on the underside. My sprint is 6 months old and I can see where scratches from pebbles and such would eventually wear at the under side. I was going to get a mud guard on the front to help prevent that but i couldn't pull the trigger. Instead I got a small roller and a couple brushes and painted the underside of my vespa with clear truck bed liner. I was afraid it would look awful but I don't think its bad at all. It was easy to do. I'm wondering if I should have painted any higher in the front? I took off the floorboard and its very tight in that compartment. I'm wondering if I should pull out the battery holder and paint the inside? Hope it looks good several years from now. Thoughts?

What a good idea. Wasn't aware there was such a thing as clear bed liner. Is it 2 part catalyzed?

Nope
Just one can. Stir and roll it on. Two coats. I also used a brush around my chrome. Had to be careful. It is textured and looks best when rolled. I hardly used any of the can. They also sell spray cans but I didn't have a shop to elevated the front end for spraying. It was simple to roll out. Can't roll it over and over and over. As it dries, extra rolling creates cotton candy little wisps of fiber that fall off.

I saw once on an episode of RoadKill. They had an aerosol can of flexible paint protector.
That might also work for this problem |

AWESOME contribution.
might need to redo every winter but for sure it will prolong any ding and chip effects. Hell this would be good for the front end of a car/truck as well, also trailers |

Maybe not as good as the bed liner stuff but...
there are clear versions..... They apply it at 5:32 and peal it off at 9:36 |

That looks like good stuff, I've never heard of it either but I'm in the UK so maybe it's not around here. A front mud flap is a great idea, I had one on my Vespa GTS and it does stop a lot of crud hitting the paint, plus it said VESPA on it!

No trying to colourmatch spray etc if it was just the black stuff. Bravo. Tom. |

i also didn't realize that clear bed liner existed...i have seen guys do all sportbike motorcycle plastics with bed liner...most of them have it done by a certified sprayer since they will spray the seams and bolt holes right so it goes back together properly...it actually looks pretty good and is really scratch resistant...i believe they have colors now...it also adds weight and wind drag...i'd love to do it to my scooter if i could find an extra set of cheap plastics to do for my buddy

Looks Great
I'm hoping it lasts years but time will tell. Seems to be tough stuff. I'm not very handy at all and I had no issues. If I can do it ... . Still wondering if I should pull the battery and battery holder so I can do the inside. Its very tight in there on my 150 sprint. I pulled all the rubber plugs from the bottom of the scoot before applying the bed liner. I didn't want to roll over them and cement them in. Its cold in my garage. Its been a few days. I just put a hair dryer on the rubber bits to warm them up and popped them back in. No problems there either. Looks good.

Vespa owners tend to poke fun at "plastic scooters".
I thought years ago that Vespa should dip the bottoms of their metal pans in a undercoating - and then paint over it. Would save those seams from showing rust in a couple of years. Your solution is what Vespa should be doing from the factory. Unprotected painted metal just behind the front wheel!! Crazy. Good on you! O.S. |

OldSchooot, Vespa actually does dip the bare metal frames in an acid wash and then dipped in an electrostatically applied primer undercoat to stop rust. It works really well on all the modern scooters. It is attracted to every seam, every nook and cranny so rust won't start easily. Then they get painted. I agree some anti stone chip paint would be a good idea under the scooter though.
I use Waxoyl under mine but also applied clear sticky backed plastic at the front behind the wheel. I also fitted a fender extender from ScooterLabs. |
