Here's a bodge I've never seen before. The shifter tube was welded back up from the inside via the cable cutouts. I thought it looked a little wonky, but it felt solid and I was impatient (of course). It's hard to make out, but that's a welding bead that goes around the inside of the tube. It was patching some sort of crack but it rusted and failed.

After a triumphant inaugural ride around the block, it sheared right off when I dropped it into neutral in the garage. Luckily it happened at 0 mph.

That's a pretty common fix here. If it's done right, it can be quite strong and long lasting. After it's welded, it can then be turned in a lathe or filed (more hackish method).
