Restoring a vs5 and figured I'd see if I could find a way to get a new seal in it. Ive restored quite a few lammy fronts but wasnt sure what the seal dimensions would be. Typically these seals seal in two places:
1. around the shaft
2. the inner diameter of the body.

The most common problem is that you can only find a shaft seal that will be the correct size for the shaft but the height is wrong and never is the correct outer diameter to seal the shock body.

The solution was to modify the original seal so that the new seal fits precisely in the old seal. Since the shaft is what is moving, the inner is what actually wears out. The outer portion is static so reusing the original isn't an issue. In the event that it was destroyed or missing, a correctly sized rubber gasket could be made to seal the outside and hold the inner seal.

If anyone has a shock they need done, just let me know or if you know how to rebuild them and just need the seal PU, shoot me a pm and ill get you the spec. (I dont have it on me right now)

The original front shock on Speedy ('69 VBC) was crap... I pulled it apart (many years back when I didn't really know much about what i was doing, but randomly loved pulling everything apart ... hmmm... nothing's changed!)... stared for a bit , found a seal that seemed to fit, upon reassembly wondered what oil to use (viscosity is something I actually knew about, as was shock absorber technology), so grabbed whatever oil was closest & used that... it was too soft, so pulled it apart & tried something thicker... on the 4th viscosity it was al dente, so i used that for many years to come

Nice job and thanks for sharing.

I'm bussy with my GS160 shocks and these seals are also hard to find. Luckily Mauro Pascoli has them for my GS but in the future i'll need a modification like yours.
Do you have more closeup pictures of the seal before and after your modification and do you have a special reason for using PU instead of a small rubber seal?
