Replacing a thoroughly worn out Speedo inner cable and worm on my PX... just a quickie in relation to reassembly:

Locating the new worm, metal spacer/bush and rubber grommet into the hub (with new cable inner fed through all), then securing with the top tab and bolt went OK. However, once fitted and secured, the cable can easily be pulled free from the hub, simply by tugging on the cable outer! Is this how it's meant to be/am I missing something?

It's almost as if the top tab and bolt serves only to secure the rubber grommet, through which the cable can be pulled easily.

Wha? emoticon

It sounds like you have everything in order. Perhaps your old rubber seal thingy is too old and needs to be replaced? The only thing that keeps the outer cable from coming out is that rubber seal. Maybe try removing all the grease from the out side of the outer cable as well?

Yup, I think that's the problem (a worn rubber grommet). Couldn't fathom why there wasn't a more robust way of securing the cable. Everything reassembled and seemingly OK for the moment.

Thanks for your help.

Is the ferrule still on the end of the cable.

I had mine apart once. I thought it was a lame design, but the tab and bolt are supposed to compress the rubber bit tightly around the cable outer making it difficult to pull out. It only works if all the surfaces are free from grease. Mine came from the factory greasy and wouldn't stay in, so I took it apart, figured out what was going on, cleaned everything up, and put it back together. That was 10 years ago, still in there snug.

If you have a decent sized rubber thingy, screwing the metal plate down, thus compressing it, will keep the cable in whether it's greasy or not. At least that's how it goes on my current bikes.

The real issue with reassembly is inserting the worm at the end, if you've removed the hub. Screwing the hub on while the worm is in place will lead to its destruction.

Rotate the wheel while assembling to force the gear teeth to engage.
