Piaggio owners probably already know this.*
Just noticed that I'd stand a good chance of locking the key to my Liberty150i in the top case - unless I keep the ignition key separate from the case key!

Dismount at my destination - toss gloves and scarf in my top case - set keys in there - bump the lid closed. Have a nice cup of Joe.
......and I'm walking 27 miles home.

So, just bought a nice matching redheaded key to leave in the box lock.
(I'm never out of sight of my scooter - and usually sitting within 5 yards of it having coffee.... taking photos)

What brand top case do you have? I have a Shad top case. I does not lock itself. I have to use a key to lock it.

I did lock my key under the seat of an early model MP3-250. I had to take a taxi home to get the spare key. Since then, my habit is to leave the key in the ignition until I am ready to walk away from the bike.

I locked my key in the helmet bucket under the seat ,the first week I owned the Prima. Luckily I had the Brown transponder key in a safe place at home.
I have now a spare Blue key made since and use it by itself in the ignition ,nothing else attached to it, no scratches that way., and I keep a spare one in my pocket with the lock key and house keys. This way no problem.

I do this as well, after walking 7 miles home to 'key fetch' and 7 miles back to 'scooter fetch' after locking my keys under the seat several years back....

I have a Givi top case - you can't take the key out of the lock unless it is locked, so no way you can lock your key in the top case. That said, I do carry my ignition key separate from the top case key. As has been mentioned earlier, I leave my key in the ignition until I am ready to walk away from the bike.

All top case locks are a joke. Next time, before you walk home, borrow just about any similar size key from a riding buddy or a passer-by, stick it in the lock and wiggle it a bit and I bet the lock will unlock.

I locked my key in a BMW motorcycle side glove box once. I had house and other keys still in my pocket. Took all of two seconds to unlock that glove box. Similar locks on top cases.

In our parts of the world, Piaggio scooters come with an extra lock barrel inside the "pet carrier" to be used with their original top case. This way you only need the ignition key to open the top case. You only need to remove the barrel that came with the top case and install the one that came with the scooter...

Thank you for that information!
Makes good sense.....but I bet I'd still make the mistake of closing the case on my key😊 Too many years of not worrying about it with my Bestem case.
And I'm not sticking anything but the proper key in this $300 custom painted case!

Response #1: Figure the Bad Guys will think it's "some kinda trick!"

Or, #2: Maybe some person needs the Moon Pies in there - more than I do.

O.S. ~ who is freq. OK with some not being OK with the stuff I do.

Exactly!!
The one time I did, I had put my keys in my jacket pocket and then decided I didn't want to wear my jacket, took it off, rolled it up and locked it under the seat. Not planning to do so in that sequence.

I've forced myself to leave the keys in the top case cylinder whenever I open it. Luckily, on The Beav, the cylinder is on the bottom of the case, so the keys don't scratch or jostle around when it's open.

Likewise, if the Pet Carrier is open for business, the keys go in the ignition.

If both are open, Ignition wins.

This.
Keys stay in whatever lock they were last used in, until I'm ready to walk away from the bike.

I never close/lock a compartment (seat, topcase) without being sure I can see (or feel, if in a pocket) the keys first.

Keys always go into a pocket of an article of clothing I won't be taking off -- usually jeans but sometimes (temporarily) a shirt pocket. They never go into a jacket or overpants/armor pocket, regardless of how inconvenient that may be.

Scooter Keys Locked Under the Seat

If you lock your keys under the seat, the easiest way to get to them is to have a strong person pull up one side of the seat high enough so the person with the skinniest arms can reach in and grab them. The base of the seat is plastic, and it will bend enough for someone to reach in and fish around without damage. If you're doing it by yourself, you can wedge something like a tennis shoe, if that's what you are wearing, or a rolled up towel, between the seat pan and the body of the scooter, so you can dig around without constantly having the pull the seat pan up off your other arm and ending up with a few nice pressure creases in your skin.

In days of yore I would have a spare key taped to the back of my license plate.

Same technology can be used today but you need a small or Phillips screwdriver to access the spare key.

You clever guys on smaller capacity bikes can figure out where to keep the spare key, without me broadcasting to the world.

Tell me where you hide yours, and your address, please... It would be nice to have something to ride if I'm ever in your part of the world.

I never leave home without my Swiss Army knife! Saved me some trouble many times. And I even got it through airport security when I was so used to having it in my pocket, I brought it along to the airport by mistake.

I locked my keys in the bucket when I was leaving work. Fortunately since I work at a hotel I was able to get a locksmith to give me a hand. He tried forever but couldn't pick the damn thing. I won't tell you what he used that did end up working so I don't give any wise guys any ideas, but it was nice to not have to take the bus home that day.

For future reference, you don't need any tools to get into the seat:
