As the wise man said: "The rumour of the death of the petrol engine is wildly exaggerated!" So lets say it's not under warranty any more, the battery costs $1000 (Replacement hybrid batteries range from $1000 to $6000. Figure a scooter is on the low end) So filing the gas tank at $10 each pays for the battery in 100 fill ups. A battery should be good for 750-1000 recharges so your numbers are wrong. |

Later model years do it all the time. And that's not a one off or a rarity. People I talk to, some have claimed 335 miles on a tank on 1200 models as far back as 2007s. |

Hi Mr WEB-Tech, thank you for your comment. So much to 'unpack' as the 'cool' young people tend to say.
My numbers are not wrong as they are borne out by many years of Li-Ion battery usage and subsequent painful hip-pocket expenditure. 800-1000 re-charges is correct as quoted by most battery makers. So if I re-charge my battery after every daily trip, that would be three years max. What is a hybrid battery anyway? I get this comment of 10-year batteries frequently, but upon further enquiry no-one is able to name a manufacturer of these magic batteries. And your assertion that petrol not used pays for a new battery negates and makes a mockery of the whole electric vehicle 'saving' fantasy. My supplier of batteries tried to make the same point by saying that: "The cost of the battery covers the cost of the fuel you would have used anyway!" So, my question is: if there is no saving whatsoever in going electric, why bother in the first place. Plus the inconvenience of re-charge times, plus range anxiety, plus the extra weight, plus the high initial cost of electric vehicles. Sorry, no sale! |

Do you have a laptop, well if you use it and plug it in every day you would get less then 3 years out of a lap top battery and the same with your cell phone. Same with an electric vehicle. A hybrid battery is not a TYPE of battery it is an application for a certain type of battery. |

Is this scooter related? I suppose so. No rules broken then.
I notice there is a thread about electric scooters elsewhere and this discussion should rightfully be part of that. Battery life is not mentioned there at all however, which is curious. Anyway, a final observation: a new electric bike has been launched in Australia, it's called Super Soco, costs $4990 and is made in Shanghai. They claim 80km range at 'moderate' speed. But the relevant bit is that they specify up to 1000 charging cycles before the $1000 battery needs replacing, and that the only other 'consumables' are tyres and brake pads. (Aussie dollars) |
