I was just digging through a box in my garage after installing some new cowl rubber, and I came across three bad stators that I have managed to collect over the last 10 years, one a stock LML and two aftermarket "euro" types. I had forgotten I had saved them.

What to do with them? I feel bad throwing them away. I imagine it's not cost-effective to try to repair them. In all three cases it wasn't just a wire coming unsoldered, but individual coils failing.

If you have the room -- keep them.

If you don't have the room or don't like the clutter offer them to somebody else.

If you're going to throw them away I'll take them.

There are many companies that can rewind them. Even one in Quebec.

if you have the time, rewire yourself. It's pretty easy. I've done once on emergency case.

I would horde them, but thats just me! Its may not be cheaper to get them rewound but you might be surprised 10 years from now! I used to just buy VW carbs rebuilt when they where cheap and now they cost an arm and a leg for a rebuilt one without a core as the new ones are crap. So my horde of 7 is a pretty nice quality of life thing, haha!

OK, you guys have convinced me to hoard them. Maybe I will send one off to get rebuilt, just to see.

I did find last night on fleabay a remarkable deal from India -- apparently new 120w-output stators for LML/Vespa, for only $23 bucks. They even have a volume discount.

If your stators are "bad" only on their ignition side, you can easily change the H.T. coil or the pickup coil. If they're "bad" on their charging side, ditch them (but keep the H.T. and pickup coils), not worth the trouble and cost in rewinding them. eBay's, so called LML stators are crap, don't waste your money...

With all of the new aftermarket variable timing ignitions nowadays, it's difficult for me to justify keeping any of my old P stators when they go bad.

Indian food is tops and I guess I can tolerate the occasional Bollywood film.
