Greetings. Last week I won a new Vespa GTS 250, and so at the age of 45, I'm about to become a scooter owner and rider for the first time. As Shakespeare said, "....some have greatness thrust upon them", and based on what research I've done on the web so far, it appears I've been thrust into something really cool. I've started the process of obtaining my motorcycle license, getting a helmet, etc.. I'm in Fallston Maryland, and just wanted to say "Hi" as my first post.

Greetings, Ed, and congratulations! I won my ET4 in a raffle a couple of years ago, and haven't looked back since-- 8)

First, take a MSF safety course. Invaluable. Can lower your insurance and take the place of DMV testing.

For great gear prices and selection, see www.newenough.com where you can opt to have them make a small donation to Modern Vespa (no cost to you). Great customer service, too. Armored jacket? Check. Good helmet? Check. Decent gloves and boots? Check.

Lots of information here. Check out the technical and review forms (and the search function). And don't hesitate to ask questions!

Happy scootin'!

Thanks for all the welcomes and great advice. This seems like a nice forum. I'll post a picture as soon as I take delivery, which should be in a week or so. One of the manufacturers I work with had the sweepstakes (http://gunlocke.com/), and I won the first one just last week. I had my choice of blue or red, and I first chose blue, but then chaged it to red since it had the black seat that I liked better. Thanks for the link to newenough. Obvously, the first thing I need is a helmet, and I've read the helmet thread here and would love to get a full face helmet. I tried one on locally today and could not get my glasses on afterwards. Yesterday I tried on an open face and had no trouble with my glasses afterwards. Any suggestions?

Hi Ed, welcome to the forum. I think it's really refreshing and cool to hear about someone winning a scooter in a competition and deciding to get into riding rather than dumping it as an "unwanted prize" in the classifieds or on eBay.

Re your helmet question, I know that a lot of folks on here who wear glasses have had success with flip up or modular helmets, so do a search on that and see how you go.

Welcome to MV and welcome to the "I won a Vespa!" club (logo in the works).

I, too, won a Vespa. It was a red LX50, after which the Vespa dealer kindly let me trade up to a Silver GT200 and I'd pay the difference.

You've landed a real shweet ride with that red GTS! Beware the 1099 form come tax time!

Pix required, per MV custom ...

NOTE TO ALL MVers: If you enter and win in a drawing or raffle for a Vespa, always go for RED. If you want to sell or trade up, it's theee preferred color. The dealer that I got my Vespa from divulged that he "could ALWAYS sell a red one". As a matter of fact, he said if I went for the black LX50, I couldn't even trade up at all! DISCLAIMER: This is, of course, at the sole discretion of the dealer providing the Vespa. Your final result may vary. Offer not available in all areas ...

I wear glasses and a full face, but I went with flip-face or modular design so I could put the helmet on and off without removing my glasses.

I have a Nolan N1, HJC SyMax and HJC CL-Max. The CL-Max is the most snug on the glasses, the SyMax the least, but since your head is shaped differently from mine, you'll want to try them all on to find one that fits you best.
