I've got a 60's vbb engine that I fully rebuilt. I can get it to turn over and idle but upon a two block test ride multiple times, she just sputters out and then doesn't want to kick back over for awhile. To start off I've checked compression over 125psi, good spark which leads to the carburetor which I've rebuilt and cleaned multiple times still not reliable and stalling out. Tried another carb and it just made things worse so my question is should I be looking for a brand new carburetor? I've had trouble timing it the past but it's not backfiring and feels strong when I accelerate but still I'm not sure if the stator is another culprit? Could this also be a grounding issue? Please help I've used way more hours then necessary already. Thanks a billion.

Sounds like you're way to rich. After riding for a bit, does it start to sputter and hesitate on acceleration before stopping altogether?

questions
does it die at the same distance from home each time??.....ie a carb full of gas gets used up ..could be the float is stuck...

when it dies, see if the plug is still wet (the plug will be hot so use gloves).....if still wet then its NOT a gas issue.

Then I would change the condensor.

the spluttering prior to cutting out smacks of starvation

....FIRST.. try a brand new plug

It does seem to die more or less within a three blocks span and I swapped out float and needle just to be sure. I was able to nab two condensers off a friend but upon having the red going to the ignition stuff in the junction box and the yellow to ground it refused to start; I then undid the yellow and she immediately came to life! Did I do the test wrong? The plug was wet and then other times seems like it was dry..... What do I try this time?
