Modern Vespa

My friend went over the hood of this car. No broken bones but his LX150 is 150% trashed.

He may end up parting it out. Not sure what else he can do with it.

That's a lot of damage and a lot of work to part it out. I'd tell him to collect his insurance check, move on and put a deposit down on a 2020 model

Yeah, it does look like one of those. Glad he is OK and the scoot can get parted out for a few things but best to deal with the insurance company.

Most importantly, your friend is OK. All the rest is just material "stuff". The fact he is OK is the most important thing.

Glad your friend made it through the accident in relatively good shape. Hopefully the incident won't spook him too much. This sort of thing is what concerns me most -- that someone won't see me on the road and just pull out. If that's what happened.

Looks like an illegal left across a double solid yellow line.

How is that not legal? Double yellow lines only control passing, doesn't limit turning left.
Otherwise I break the law everytime I leave the driveway at work.

The guy in the Mazda was pulling out of a car wash with a car parked along the street, which I guess obscured his view of oncoming traffic at just the wrong moment. The whole thing sucks. He just got the LX repaired the day before and was buzzing it out when this happened. I had done a short ride with him less than an hour before. Then the "need help" text came.

That's tough to see, but glad your friend is ok. He'll likely be sore for a couple of days depending on his landing.

About the only thing salvageable is the rear rack. The motor might be ok.

Be sure he claims any gear and helmet that was being worn at the time. Insurance should replace all of that.

What makes this extra bad is that his LX150 had a salvage title and I doubt the deductible on his policy is low enough that his gear would come into play.

This is where the whole salvage title thing comes into play. Technically this scooter had already been written off so it's value is zero. The rules for titling a salvage bike vary from state to state. My brother lives in Georgia and I don't think they allow salvage titles. I'm pretty sure in NJ you need to provide documentation to establish that the repairs were done and the vehicle is safe to ride. The mechanic that saved this scooter in the first place did all of the repairs himself and was able to salvage title it but you can only insure for liability.

I think the only recourse my friend has is to make a personal injury claim with the other person'r insurance company and see what happens.

glad he's ok...interested to see how this plays out as far as insurance goes...if the payout is nothing it may be worth it to part it out depending how much it costs to buy it back from the insurance company...not a good situation...may be time to look on CL for a used scoot

But he didn't sign the insurance policy the other guy had and that is what is covering him. He should be made whole. Just threaten to take them to small claims court for the cost of the scooter. No lawyers in small claims court and they are screwed.

Just another difference between the UK and US then.
Here, a vehicle can be written off because it's uneconomical to repair, but it's perfectly legal to repair and return to the road.

You can insure it again and make further claims, or sell it, but it's value will be about 30% less than one with no accident history. It definitely isn't zero value.
