My 2020 GTS has bar end weights (and topcase). I don't seem to have an allen wrench that fits the bolts in the bar ends. Does anyone know the size I need? Thanks

No rulers or tape measures in the house? To measure either the bolt or the key that doesn't fit?

I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I've never seen a set of metric allens that didn't have that size. It's used in a lot of places.

Thanks for the responses! I probably should have mentioned the reason for my question. I recently bought Canyon Dancers, and the instructions on them says that they shouldn't be used with bar end weights. The bolt in the weights could bend or break. I figured I should keep the correct allen wrench in my scooter's tool kit in case I ever use the Canyon Dancers after a breakdown. Other people with Canyon Dancers and bar end weights may want to do the same.
Thanks again. |

You'll likely get a bunch of responses about whether to take the weights off or not when using Canyon Dancers. Bunch of people don't find it necessary. Apparently the new Canyon Dancers have cups unlike the earlier ones and the cups don't sit as nicely on the weights as they do the bars without weights. I always remove the weights on my '17 GTS with a #4.

I put bar end weights on both Sprint 150s we own and they make a big difference. We also haul them places in the back of the pickup truck and use the Canyon Dancers with the plastic cup. Never taken off the bar ends and never had a problem with a bolt bending.

I bought 2 sets of Canyon Dancers and have not used them yet because of the warning on the bending of the bar end weight bolts. I feel there is a fair amount of tension on the front tie downs (enough to compress the front suspension 2/3) during trailering, and I have not yet tried to remove bar end weights. For now I just use a tie down loop strap over the handle grips. I'm curious what the larger consensus is, on the need for removal of bar end weights when using Canyon Dancers?

I use Canyon Dancers and I've never had a problem with bar end screws. BTW the screws on my BV350 are 4mm hex socket.

I use canyon dancers, and our scoots have the long heavy bar-end weights. I always leave them on. If the bike is cinched down properly, there should be no undue sudden impacts on them.

My experience of tying down PTW's is mostly with much heavier BMW GS machines for both off-road and paved roads.
I also use bar straps similar to original Canyon Dancers. In my book, the diagonal straps are used only to prevent toppling - not to secure the PTW itself. I secure the front wheel to the load bed using a wheel clamp (see image) and straps, either around the axle (GS) or around the tire to prevent rearward movement on pull away. Similarly the rear wheel is secured to the load bed to prevent bounce. Using only diagonals to secure front to rear movement and toppling would place ALL the tension forces on the end of the bars, which is why I understand that warning about over-straining the bar-end weight bolts. (Manufacturer warnings are much cheaper than litigation.) At a recent Vespa gathering, I saw the local agents securing multiple machines using a fixed front wheel chock clamp, bar straps going diagonally forward and lifting the rear to put the machine onto the main stand. (I would have also tied down the rear wheels to prevent bouncing!) They used straps through the passenger handles only to prevent toppling against each other. They also used short lengths of "pool noodles" like boat fenders to prevent chafing between bikes and other objects. |
