In an interview with the Repubblica daily:
"With Easy Rider - the actor said in an interview with Repubblica in 2003 - we overwhelmed every rule and unleashed the ire of the studios, which hated me and Dennis Hopper "Peter Fonda says" Only Jack Nicholson got away with it. In Hollywood they thought we wanted to make a revolution: they called us Jacobins. The government can understand it, but why was Hollywood so afraid of us? Of course, then only in certain European films I found something interesting. But for us they were very exciting years .
In those days there was a revolutionary atmosphere in the air: Hollywood was ready to be reinvented, the old guard had lost contact with the public, especially the young. And here we come, young and full of ideas that the old generation did not understand; while the young people understood us very well, and not surprisingly they immediately loved Easy Rider. And we were not alone: so many films at the time went beyond the rules, films like "Bonnie and Clyde", for example. But Easy Rider was special because we protagonists really were part of the generation of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll .
When we went to Cannes with that movie they didn't know how to take us: I, Dennis and Jack had long hair, we smoked spinels, we drank, we were like the characters in the movie, and people went crazy for us. The independent cinema movement of today does not it would have existed without the directors of those years. There was an atmosphere very similar to that which is lived here in Sundance, with all these young people full of ideas, at the beginning of their careers, who want to learn and experiment ".
