I also know what 3M stands for, which nobody else seems to do in Europe.

Well, living one state over from them probably gives me a bit of an advantage.

Lots of companies use acronyms - 3M (Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing), GM (General Motors), FIAT (Fix It Again Tony), and so forth.

I own an IT support company. We have more acronyms in our industry than you can shake a Johnson Rod at. One of the first ones you learn on the Helpdesk is PEBKAC . Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair... ID Ten T (ID-10-T) is another one but is pretty obvious...

it is true, here the same thing happens to us and the comment is the same ... who knows why. I am bent halfway by the big laugh..!

3M is easy, but what about M&M?

They so obviously came up with the name first then made up the acronym after.

I used to work quite some time for a company that had a bit of history at the industrial software side... let's just say the heavily overused the lifespan of the Unix System V, which says enough for those in the field.

With the history came a heavy load of acronyms. One was used in our customer software manuals, so I asked from my boss what it stands for. My boss had been there for ages. Surprise, surprise, even he didn't know...

These are awful. As in, why-even-bother-with-such-stupid-acronyms-in-the first-place awful. Aren't all valved engines multi-valve? Don't they all have fairly similar ranges? What is "low" about the LEADER engine? Using "engine" twice in the same acronym?

I'm going to assume these acronyms are based on much more mellifluous Italian words that have been retrofitted into English. You'll not convince me otherwise.

What the heck is wrong with 4T and 2T, which stands for "temps" in French, or similar words beginning with T meaning "stroke" in Romance languages?
