Hi All! Insurance has come through, I got a buy back bid, a total loss value more than what I paid for and will end up getting a mini phat check back...new jacket here I come and then some! Oh, and as you all mentioned and suggested...I went to SJVespa and they had exactly what I needed to make my mini repairs and Bosco himself gave me a quick scoot repair lesson. These little buggers aren't that hard to get into for fixing Thanks again to all that helped with their suggestions and words of advice for dealing with the insurance company. You've all been great! Hopefully I'll have good words of advice down the road for others as you've helped me. PEAS-OUT!

Soooo, I let a few people on here know about my scoot incident but it's killin me that I can't ride my scoot right now.

The story goes, I'm working out at the gym and walk out to my scoot where I parked it to leave. When I get there, I see it on it's left side having fallen into the front passenger door of another vehicle (which I knew the owner). I was parked in the middle of the spot, not pulled allllll the way into the spot but I guess someone really had to get to the yoga class for fear of not getting a good spot to put their yoga mat on ( insert sarcasm here ). Luckily I have full coverage and the guys door will be taken care of. We had a bit of a language barrier and couldn't find all the right words to talk about what happened, so he thinks that I dropped it into his car. That I hate most of all, but I made sure the reports cleared that up.

My end sucks though, I can't start on any repairs (minor stuff, bumps, bruises, scratches) like replacing the mirror that was snapped off at the bolt or bending back my left brake handle. I'm not comfortable enough to not have a mirror while I'm on the road. I figure the jackass that tapped it and knocked it over attempted to pull it back up by holding the mirror. Lame. So I don't get to practice riding, I don't get to enjoy the nice weather. Luckily I get to wear skirts and high heels to work now with out having to bring them as a change of clothes.

Sigh. People suck. I guess it wouldn't be all that horrible had someone, anyone just let me know that it happened.

Signing off,
Sadly Missing Scooter'ing

I wish it were as easy as just getting a mirror back up. Because insurance is involved, I can't make any repairs yet until they finish their paperwork. I asked the insurance guy if I could start with the minor repairs and he said I have to wait. Sigh.

Scoot Vandal update
Hi All

Here is the update on my scoot vandal incident....my insurance has totalled out my scoot...on with my repairs. This sucks! I guess the total value of the scoot is less than the cost of repairs so I sort of lose either way. I still owe a bit, so if I get a check from them I have to surrender the scoot and I lose out on money AND having my scoot. If I keep the scoot I get the difference? or something like that. I get the final details in 2 days. I just need back on the scoot before the weather turns...on to SJVespa for my parts...yay!

do not settle for less than what you still owe on the scoot. request them to pay off the note.

Drama huh! I guess will all the minor paint scratches all around they must have incorporated the cost of a paint job...I just had the scoot for close to 3 weeks (purchased it gently used) so all of this is still quite new to me. I heard insurance co.'s are quick to total out scoots and cycles. Go figure.

if that's the case, buy it back from the insurance company for pennies on the dollar after they assume your loan

What kind of numbers are we talking about here? How much for the paint job? How much is your scoot worth?

The scoot is paid off...sigh. This is one time I guess I might have benefitted from not buying used? I'm just glad I didn't have to pay a dime for the repairs on the other car it fell into.

They wanted to total out mine when I lowsided mine. The dealership had interesting things on their estimate like:
No frame damage

then

Needs new frame

They also put things on the estimate like a new center stand. Yeah, it was scrapped from me USING it NOT from the accident.

Discuss with the shop that you took the scoot to get the estimate to go over with you line by line of their estimate as to WHY they need to total your bike.

I kind of agree, a brake lever and a mirror DO NOT equal totalling out the bike. Now if there is frame damage.

Oh, my bike did get a paint job. It did put it close to the price point where insurance "totals" the bike out but it was still under that amount. PS, get crash bars, they'll save you time off the bike!

pay the 10-20% (of the money they are going to pay you) for the totaled scoot (it was totaled in the first place so what the difference other than broken mirror& lever)

I'm still waiting for the final numbers from insurance, they gave me a round about figure this a.m., something around 2500. I purchased it salvaged at a price not much more than that so maybe that has something to do with it.

Unless they give you a shit load of money for totalling it, I'd convince the insurance company to not total it. When I went into the back of a car on my small frame, my insurance company was going to total it and I talked them out of it. These things are possible, but it depends on if you want to keep the scoot or just walk away from it.

The insurance company sent someone out to take pictures of the scoot and submitted it to their analysis dept. or something....I physically did not take it to a repair shop as they said not to do anything until I get their report. No shop has seen it to evaluate if there is frame damage....should I still take it in before I make any decisions? Does it have to be a scoot shop?

Contact Bosco in San Jose, if that's the closest shop for you. Screw the insurance company. If there isn't any frame damage, it shouldn't be totalled. If there is, well, take the money.

To answer your question, and to reiterate what Spock said. How important is it for you to have THAT bike? When they mentioned they might total my bike I KNEW my spill didn't cause that much damage, unless there was frame damage. Being I'm no expert I took mine to the dealer I bought it from. My insurance guy went there and took the photo's of it there.

Your insurance guy should've even offhandley mentioned that it's YOUR RIGHT to take YOUR BIKE wherever you want to get an estimate. You could even pay out of pocket for repairs. It's your bike afterall. Leave the negotiation between claims adjuster and repair shop dudes, IF that's your choice. I did but it took 2.5 months for parts, paint and everything to get ironed out.

Everyone gives nothing but props to Bosco up at San Jose...does he know how popular he is in here??? haha, yea he is cool though. I went in looking for jackets and mentioned my sticky seat latch situation because I was going to order another latch and he just showed me how to fix it and went on his way. Ben also helped me out a LOT when searching for a jacket. Great shop! They are a distance for me. Il Motorino in Santa Cruz is much closer, but they never answer the phone. I'd rather drive and get what I need than play phone tag. San Jose Vespa wins again!

HAHAha!...too funny! I think I'll give my insurance lady one more call to clarify how this whole thing works to make sure I got things right. Either way after the buy back, the less than $100 in repairs, I'll have money to cover my new jacket and some boots oooooh yeaaaaaa. Then I can get my dad to paint my scoot and I'm good to go!
