My stator is in bad shape and has a few bad solder points so I need to take it out. The three bolts that mount it to the crankcase are stuck, I've already kind of stripped two of the heads. I can't use heat since they're so close to the wires. What do I do!?

Hold the screwdriver in the slot tight and tap the end of the screwdriver with a hammer. See if shocking it helps.

If you cant find a better tapered screw driver for the other two, you could get a dremel head and turn those Phillips heads into slotted.

Option 1. Grip the edge of the screw with a pair of vice grips. Clamp down hard and twist it out.

Option 2: Get an old skool impact driver... the kind you whack with a hammer. They sell them at HF for like nine bucks, complete with bits. One solid whack and it should loosen.

I've had luck in the past using vise grips on the screw driver handle to create more leverage, and while pushing the screwdriver bit in as hard as possible twisting on the "lever" that you have created.

Use the right tool?
If you have damaged it like that, then it's likely you're using the incorrect tool!
Put away the POZI & Use the correct sized #2 PHILLIPS head (possibly its #3 - a big one, but defo NOT #1 -the small one). Use a screwdriver, NOT a drill & push real hard on it, then turn slightly.

When/if you use the vicegrips, ensure you use them the correct way around, so they tighten when turned, as many users use vicegrips & adjustable spanners incorrectly... see pics below.
The FIXED JAW needs to be taking the load/torque/tension... the ADJUSTABLE JAW is merely there to hold whatever in place... otherwise, the adjustable jaw will simply want to open further & things slip!
Usefullness.

Pozidriv vs Phillips head.

you need a tool called an "impact screwdriver." This is a tool that i used often on stubborn stator screws just like you have discovered. if you are not getting anywhere, I am in Indy and can have those screws out in 30 seconds.

Impact driver. I owned this one (Sears) for almost 50 years. As long as you have enough room to swing a hammer, it will work. I don't know what it is about stator bolts, they are never fun to take out. Too many people think you have to tighten like a gorilla when installing.

The impact screwdriver did the trick! I picked up a Craftsman driver with a few bits from Lowe's for $15, got the bolt out with 2 whacks. For anyone reading this thread who has the same issue, GET AN IMPACT DRIVER. What an amazing tool.
