Tierney wrote: Long, long time ago I was riding on I95 in Florida in the left most (fast) lane. I had a large truck in front of me and another behind me and we were going along at pretty good clip. To my right was a Cadillac driven by an elderly lady. She starts moving over into my lane slowly, no signal, no warning. I hit the horn, still coming. I hit the horn longer, still coming. The emergency lane was not much of an option as it was quite narrow and full of junk. Anyhow, she's still moving over - I kick her door - nothing. I kick it again - nothing - she is halfway in my lane and even the truck behind me is hitting his horn and backing off some. Still nothing, still coming over. I reached back where my chain was hung and swung it across her windshield. I meant just to hit the window, but it cracked it, put a small hole in it and took the chain out of my hand. Well, that worked, she swerved all over the road and was cussing me out in a blue streak taking the chain, hanging, along for the ride That's the scary part, here's the stupid part. That was a really good chain, and I wanted it back, so I followed the Caddy at a distance until the end of the destination. I parked down the block, waited until she went in the house, grabbed the end of the chain that was sticking out of the windshield, yanked it out, ran back to the scoot and got out of there quick. I have done crazy things and stupid things, but this day stands out as a time where I did both. |

The stupidest: deciding to ride to Abilene Texas sans glove box. Every time the fan came on it was burning my left shin.
The scariest: when my first Vespa blew up in flames in my driveway. |

Shortly after being diagnosed with diabetes I realized one day that I had forgotten to take all my meds that morning. I turned around, headed home, took the pills and headed back out to realize that I was now almost out of gas. I stopped to refill then headed off feeling really pressed for time. I stopped at an intersection I don't normally frequent. There was a line of pickups parked to my left but I couldn't see or hear anything moving. I pulled out turning left and come face-to-face with an oncoming car. Thank God the driver stopped. I... nearly stopped. Slowly rolled into the bumper with just enough force to crack my fender, couldn't get my feet down fast enough so I ended up falling straight over to my left. I don't think my helmet even hit ground, it didn't have a mark. I got up, picked up the Buddy and proceeded to assure the poor driver that I wasn't dead. I actually ended up hugging her to calm her down.

NSR - When I had the Yamaha XT 500 a long time ago, I rode to the south east of the state, a big wine growing/making region, for a specific sparking burgundy. After a tasting at the winery previously, and buying a bottle I needed to stock up with more.
It was about 300 kilometres away, so an easy day ride up and back. So, at the winery purchased 6 bottles, placed in duffle bag and strapped across the seat. Racing for home, I happened to glance at the bag behind me and it is on fire! Well it was only the corner of the bag closest to the exhaust that was burning. Flames were put out by stamping on the bag after occy straps removed. No damage to the seat. 4 bottles had slipped out through the flames on route. Boy did I make an effort to really enjoy the 2 expensive bottles. |

Riding an old 1970s 120cc two-stoke Suzuki, forgot which gear I was in while travelling at speed, let the clutch out in what must have been first gear at around 30mph. Rear wheel lock-up... clutch straight back in and held it... lesson learned. At least on the shifty Vespas you can see which gear you're in

First day with my K1600GT Sport.
So figuring out parking arrangement with it in our spot. I back up the Ural and pull it in to a neighbours spot temporarily as they were out. I back the BMW out in neutral and move it over to in front of where I want to place it. Pop it in to 1st and BAM engine turns off. I think WTF? So back in to neutral and then in to first and same thing. "Insanity Is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over Again and Expecting Different Results" and I was starting to get a little insane. Very top of the line Motorrad vehicle and here I am thinking it's already broken. So I figure I have to call the dealer and go to put the kickstand down and..... yeah you guessed it, it was down... boy did I feel stupid. Thing is the C650GT would not start at all with the stand down and it was a safety feature. The K1600 does but ONLY in neutral. Makes sense as the C650 had no gears but hindsight and all that. |

On a nice day, my buddy on his Norton Comando and I on my Honda 305 scrambler decided to race up Mount Tamalpais. We didn't need helmets in those because our heads were so hard. I would out lean him on the curves but he would eat me on the straights! Trying to catch the Norton again I was leaning hard into a right turn when I hit some gravel and slid into the ditch, still hanging on but not touching the saddle. I hit a rock in the ditch and ended up back on the road. I remember the CHP Motoman leaning down with his blue plastic bow tie asking if I was alright. I was but the bike brake pedal buried itself into the dynamo. I could bend it out and straightened out the handlebars. I was in shock but able to limp home to SF. Many lessons learned.

Slapstick silent movie pratt fall!
In the UK riding scooters used to attract a lot of unwanted negative attention, particularly of the Mods v. Rockers type of incident back in the day.
One night, I was riding along the road with a dozen Mod buddies on Vespas and Lambrettas when a leather clad fool ran out in the road and took a swing at a guy three scoots ahead of me. He missed and got back on the pathway and was gesticulating with what we call in the UK as the "wank spanner"...meaning he thought we were habitual masturbators. Well, I mounted the pathway on my Vespa with my left leg outstretched and hit this guy up the ass at 40 mph, sending him into the air and landing legs up ass down like an old Harold Loyd silent movie prattfall. I looked back and saw him look round like a cartoon "WTF?!" and the dog he was walking started to bite him! It was hilarious. I laughed all the way home. It was sweeeet! That was the second most stupid/dangerous thing I did on a Vespa. The 1st shall remain undisclosed as it was even more stupid/dangerous and illegal! No internet back then so we made our own fun. |
