perhaps I missed the posting of this but an iconic actor Kirk Douglas died 2/5/2020 at the age of 103, a good long life. Many of you may be too young to remember him but he had a great many roles over the years. Perhaps one of the best was Sparticus, still worth watching. His son Michael Douglas has also had quite a career. RIP Mr. Douglas you had quite a career.

appreciate the responses but I am a bit surprised that there was so little response to this, I guess I am getting old. Most likely do not even know who he was.

People know.. but its been so long since he's acted in any Hollywood movie that he just doesn't have as much presence and importance in younger generations understanding of film. Don't take my comment as a negative view of him or his importance in film history. I fully understand his critical role in the history of film and Hollywood, but he is of a different generation, so his films don't hold the same level of affect for me. Even with that said, it is a truly sad loss for the film industry, because of his role in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Not many left from that era. I actually wish movies were still like that and less hyper realistic or poorly written like they are now.
I've always been way more obsessed with Humphrey Bogart's noir films and Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef's spaghetti westerns, having worked my way through many of them over the years. I think I will start working my way through Kirk Douglas classics now! |

Spartucus might have been one of his top movies, but he was part of my childhood western t.v diet along with the 'classic' westerns. Somehow I still remember the plot to 'The War Wagon', maybe because it also had John Wayne in it. RIP.

This stuff these days sends me off to Wikipedia to learn more...
Actually born Issur Danielovitch, of Russian Jewish ancestry. It's perhaps not surprising to have a stage name, but unfortunately the name covers up a lot about the real person. Part of the Hollywood imagery, I guess. And John Wayne, AKA Marion Morrison. Just read he got "Duke" from his canine sidekick as a kid. Funny, one of my patients an older guy from Illinois was named Marion. One day I told him that he's only one of two male Marions I knew of....he chuckled and named John Wayne. Guess he'd been on top of that for a while. But yeah, Douglas was an icon in his day. 8) |
