Modern Vespa

So, my best buddy is on Stellaspeed most of the time and he says that the Modern Vespa forum is just a bunch of weenies that talk about what we had for breakfast and what our favorite colors are. I told him that was BS and that we are a serious forum with serious problems and serious solutions.

Which got me to thinking. Who is your favorite TV detective? I have to go with Peter Falk, Columbo. He never got the girl but he was so damn clever.

I was wondering if the Aussies got the same TV as in the U.S. McGarrett was in my top 5. Five-0. He "got the girl" on occasion. Tough, but suave. Good hair.

It doesn't have a macho feel that's for sure. But I feel that the 'what's your favorite color' posts are much easier to handle (i.e. wade through)than the "why won't my chinese scooter run" and "what is the jetting for a stella with a sito plus, 10 mirrors and union jack seat cover, oi mate, it runs like shite" posts. Something about sincere versus insincere uninformedness.

They can keep their "genuine imitation" Stellas, with their seats made from the hides of endangered naugas, and it will never really be about anyone other than Magnum P. I....unless he's on vacation at the Robin Masters compound, in which case, yup: Matlock. And you can tell your "friend" to back the heck off, cuz Angela Landsbury cannot hold a candle.

Okay, I just googled the guy. No, I haven't seen a single Agatha Christie in my life. I intend to correct that ASAP.

James Rockford (played by James Garner) is my favorite detective. If they redid that show today, I'm sure he'd be driving a beat-up PX200. With a side car. And Angel would be riding in the side car!

I think any crime-fighter qualifies. Anyone remember that really big, fat dude? 1970's? I think he was a private dick. Speaking of private dicks, anyone ever heard of The Busted Flush? It's a boat. There's some real trivia. Mostly in books but made the small screen once.

Wow, Boston Blackie, I totally forgot about him. I loved Inspector Farraday, who had the buffoon role from City Hall.

If we're going to go back to the BB era might as well throw in Dashiel Hammet's Thin Man series, they were great and were the predecessor to many of our beloved detective shows that followed.

We get all your American cop shows, although we've made some beauties ourselves.

One of the great, seminal Australian bands Radio Birdman had a song called Aloha Steve and Danno. Seek it out!

And I love Peter Falk. (His role in Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire...Magic!)

apparently Peter Falk never learned his lines or cues for the role of Columbo and use to ad lib huge sections of the script 8)

the theme music also came about while he was ad libbing a telephone call to the weather man and while the guy went off to find some information for Columbo, Peter Falk started whisteling down the phone and the tune he made up became the theme music to the show



Oh yeah! and the character of Columbo was based on character from Tolstoy's 'War and Peace'

Liked Radio Birdman and The Saints from that era.

To be fair, many of you are weenies ... but i've never signed up to Stella Speed and don't really plan on it. ( even though i'm friends with many people on there including the moderator) I'll stick with the weenies for now.


*more serious tone* But I'll say this - the weenies among you have shown some real progress over the last few months. I think some of you are de-weenifying. It gives me hope for the future.
