Good day guys.

Myself and a mate are going on a 2500km trip in April. He's riding a 300GTS and I'll be on my 250GTS. I would like to know what tools to take to deal with minor roadside issues, if something goes wrong. Thanks guys.

That's a well thought out road repair/tool kit. I'm going to print it off and do an inventory of my own stuff before spring riding gets here.

preparation will go as far as a good tool kit. Check your maintenance intervals, and take care of anything that is close before the trip. Obvious ones are tires, plug, belt and exhaust gasket.

I would definitely recommend you each bring at least one front and one rear tire, plus plug kits, a spare belt. Beyond that, assorted tools suggested by others will I'm sure be mandatory. Best of luck on your adventure!

Do any maintenance that's going to come due before the ride. New tyres if you're not sure they'll last. Take a tyre plug kit. Factory tool kit. Because there's two of you you're not stranded if one bike has a problem.

Anything else is just taking up valuable space you could use for liquor.

Good point. Another reason for a front rack. Scooter emoticon

I don't bother to carry tools when I ride my Yamaha XMAX.

Even on a 3900 mile ride last year.

I did change the oil in Ithaca, NY, but used the tool borrowing program at an Autozone.

Of course, the XMAX is my only new scooter, and there is a Yamaha dealer in every town.

Still love my old Vespas, but their age makes it necessary to be prepared to make repairs on the side of the road.

Carrying two tires on your GTS 250 is completely impractical. I see the OP is in South Africa. I would suggest the OP finds a way to outsource tires overnight before heading out.

Here in the states there are a few dealerships that will ship tires overnight if you need them in a pinch.

Nothing like The sensational minimalist tool kit.

Here's my newbie cursory kit from 10 years ago:

I lived in South Africa and some of those routes have towns few and far between. Long high speed hauls will chew the back tyres due to heat in the tyre. I would suggest each of you pack a back tyre. Not much of an issue to pack it on the scoot as it is so small. You do not want to be stranded in the middle of the Karoo with a cooked back tyre. (been there with a blown Mini head gasket years ago in summer - not good). I would suggest that comprehensive toolkit too.

I didn't word that clearly, then. I meant to imply that one rider should carry a front tire, and one rider should carry a rear. They're not terribly heavy, could be easily zip-tied just about anywhere on the bike, and if either rider had a blowout or cut a sidewall, front or rear, there'd be a replacement on hand.

Inner tubes would take up far less room, and it's very unlikely that a tyre gets so buggered up a plug won't fix it anyway.

You can mount a 130/70-12 front or rear just fine. It would be better for both riders to carry that size, as well as the aforementioned inner tubes and plug kit. You can usually put a tube in a tire without taking it off the scooter. On the rear, you would have to take off the swingarm. And if it goes flat with a tube , it's going to happen much faster than you might anticipate. And carry some sort of tow rope, in case one of you breaks down in the middle of nowhere. If you can roll it, you can tow it. And if you need to throw it in someone's truck, you have a way to tie it down.
