I have taken a huge leap of faith and purchased this from a chap in Spain, based solely on the images shown (plus some words about missing components)

I dont intend a full blown restoration which will in effect make it a custom scooter. I'm intending to leave the paintwork and is with some patch tidying so the vehicle wears its age with pride.

Engine strip and rebuild, stainless bolts all round and a general overhaul of the bike

hope so

doesn't look to need too much in the way of bodywork

just adding a few more photos of what it currently looks like - before it lands from the courier

i would not touch a damn thing on that cosmetically. do the necessities like tires, tubes, cables, shocks, rubber, rebuild the motor and call it done.

a well sorted T5 is one of the best city bikes you'll ever ride.

welcome to the dark side

Sweet!

I am curious about the headlight and turn signal switches...where's the on/off rocker, hi/low rocker, and the horn button? It looks kinda like you have two turn signal switches instead? Also one mirror post through the headset? It was just a couple things that popped out to me. Maybe T5's for the Spanish market were different?

GONGRATS!!! Another T5. You'll definitely love it. I reluctantly bought mine but I immediately changed my mind when I rode it. Although it's a P/PX series frame, it rides completely different...

@whodat: If I remember correctly, Spanish T5s have the lights always on, that's why the different switches. Mirror post is also present on mine but I'm not going to use it...

It landed Saturday

a little extra transit damage, but nothing too dramatic - just a tad misshapen on the front mudguard. should be able to sor that out with a cup of something warm and a few judicious twists of the metal.

i will make an inventory of whats missing in terms of electrickery this evening and see if i can get some lights to work when i depress the kickstart.

then its on to a good once over to list parts needed

Taken the opportunity of the lockdown to do a couple of jobs on the T5

stripped and rebuilt the carb - although it wont idle without the choke on - i suspect a blocked idle jet or idle jet circuit.

swapped out the well dodgy and broken finned flywheel for a spare set i had - which will also lead me to rebuidling a couple of my other stators over the weekend.

took the headset off to see why the switches werent working.... to find out they were damaged and or not connected, so swapped out the lightswitch for one i bought for another scooter and didnt get to use.... still no joy. swapped out the regulator... houston we have lights and a horn

oh swapped out the petrol tank for one i had in my bits pile....... remembered why it was in the bits pile............ tap was leaking.

photos attached

Loving the T5. The floor looks great from the underside. I'm always a bit concerned about water getting trapped under those fixed mats, but yours looks good. The benefits of a life spent in Spain!

Took the dashboard apart on the T5 as the rev counter isnt working

NO SURPRISE THERE

noticed a blown diode - although on this particular bust speedo i can see the remnants of what i think is a switching diode

photos to follow

images as promised

has anyone on here tried to repair one of these?

am i correct that this is a switching diode that is blown?

is it worth the time to attempt to repair or is it likely to be beyond repair as the AC/DC breakdown will have been caused by an alternate component on the board failing and im looking at it repeating again the moment i attempt to feed the bikes voltage through it?

Well it looks like i have found the root cause of why this thing and many others have fried.

there looks to be bridging in the solder across the voltage regulator which in turn feeds the voltage direct to the diode.

the transistor will be fried as well..... so its off to hunting spare electronic components from online stores.

should i manage to repair this one - i will be offering a repair service for them i think

it helps when you have an older brother who is an electronics expert - albeit in another country.... the wonders of modern technology eh?

Honestly, why is this so appealing to some people? The original nuts and bolts Piaggio sourced were so superior to any new hardware on the market. Just two cents.

Did some work on the electrics today

sorted the indicators out, need to find a set of black ones as the only decent ones i had were chrome and on this bike with the way its going to be left, i think they stick out like a sore thumb at the back
https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipPL_8QfZA6ukTz0ymLq-ksIC2Hzu_WRbd2enEWx

Started tidying up the mess of a wireing loom at the front and took out some creative bodgery
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ppse2QKraNaXdifE8

Then i needed to remove the headset top to make life eaiser for fitting a new clutch cable and feeding the indicator switch in - found this
https://photos.app.goo.gl/7s7ZSVNTVad4vnfp9

had to take it off with a chisel as that is the way it was put on - aarrgghhhhh - this poor beauty has had a hard life.

I intend to do the electickery and speedo before i strip the engine down

I will be fitting new brake shoes to the scooter in the morning along with the already fitted new(ish) rims and tyres

Thats all for this evening

After i had pulled the engine out and rebuilt with new seals, bearings, rebuilt cush drive etc etc etc

I found i needed to do something about the state of the silent blocks. I had a set of BGM 200 ones and wondered if these could be used, there appeared to be some similarities so i asked a question here

T5 Engine Mounts

Received some helpful advice and confirmation i could use the 200 silent blocks - albeit with some modifications.
