Anybody have practical usage tips?

My Kilimanjaro jacket has long since given up its waterproofing. Lately it is too bad to tolerate. After 8 years of service I thought to retire it and purchase a new one. But the design has changed radically from mine and I don't like some of the changes.

Read about wash-in DWR on here and have decided to give it a try. Between the jacket and my gloves (different product) it will save me about $350 to $400.

I really want this to work. I've got the tech wash to do first, then the waterproofing. To give it the maximum chance of working, should I let it soak for a while between the wash and rinse cycle? Or is that just overkill?
I also got a textile wax product to go over seams once it has dried back out.

Any tips?

I use Nikwax TX direct wash in and I let it soak 5 minutes, but I dont think it makes a big difference if you dont let it soak.

x2 on the Nikwax. There are several products from them so you need to read the bottles and figure out what is most applicable for your application. we have using nikwax for years on our ski clothes.

I get a spray can of "Camp Dry" form Walmart .
Have used it for several years in the past to help keep me dry.

I don't think there are really any products out there that will keep you completely dry short of a true GorTex jacket , and they cost a kings ransom .

Unless you go for an actual rain suit.

I've used their stuff for a long time on my hiking boots. Figured I'd stay with a company I trusted. I also got their glove waterproofing too - my gloves get damp.

I look at the Barbour line and wish I could afford something from them.
At my age (75) I know I should treat myself to one , but for the actual amount of riding I do at this point . It's hard to justify, oh hell who am I kidding.

Yes to the OP on practical usage of the Nikwax stuff on breathable outdoor wear. We have been using it for years, on regular intervals. all of your stuff will be practically like new. I still have a hardshell I use for skiing that was purchased around 2003. I wash it in the machine with the Nikwax stuff about every 3 years. Still working and waterproof. Don't put non breathable stuff in the machine at the same time. Soaking makes no difference since the wash cycle has a period of time for soaking. Use both the cleaning and water proofing products.

A lot of Goretex jackets are basically regular jackets with an inner liner of Goretex that can be removed. This is sort of a Goretex knockoff. They run about two sizes too small though. They are made for a particular jacket, but fit in a lot of different ones. I put one in a 25 year old Heine Gerecke that I had stopped using for the reason you describe. This company puts a lot of stuff on Amazon, so you might be able to get free shipping if you are a prime member. They also have a pant liner.

3m makes a great fabric water proofing spray, use it on boat canvas covers and it works very well
