Now what?

I had two of them to start with, one with a metal tag on it with a serial number. Silly me, I never got around to recording that number somewhere safe on my computer.

I put the first one down somewhere in my house and lost track of it early on while looking for a key ring to attach it to. That was the one WITHOUT the serial number, since I wanted to keep the one with the tag "safe". However when I couldn't find it again, I used the tagged one "just temporarily", until the first one turned back up.

That one I had hooked onto my scooter key ring, but somehow (I have no idea how) it came off my keys during a ride yesterday. I opened my top case to take my helmet out, rode my scooter for about an hour, then when I went to open the case to put my helmet in, found that it was not on the key chain.

I've looked around my house for the first one but haven't found it yet.

What are my recourses here? I can't even remove the top case without the key... Much less open it.

I would ride it to a locksmith and then have him re-key it to match the ignition key. I did mine per the instructions on M/V.

Yes you can, a good locksmith can pick your glove box and rekey it.
Providing the milling (Blank) is the same.

At this time ilco/silca are not supporting this blank for the american market They come in "limited quantity" because of lack of demand.??

Locksmith's that can get them get screwed $$.

On my Locksmith forum this is a big issue not just for Piaggio(silca) blanks but for many others.

Cheers

What instructions are these?

How hard will it be to find a locksmith that can do this? Jim refers to there being a shortage of suitable blanks -- should I call ahead to ask if they have it before making the trip? (Ilco? Silca?)

If your ignition key fits into the topbox lock you should be OK.

I had a local locksmith re-key my Vespa top box to the ignition key. It should be NBD and maybe cost about 25 bucks or less.

You can find detail instructions here under the Technical Forum. Watch your thumb Razz emoticon

The Silca after market blank is not supported by ilco hence the amount of keys i order from England and Italy, Is HUGE.
And because of their "limited numbers" Ilco charge the Locksmith a small fortune. So there is little incentive for the wee locksmith on the corner to buy and stock them. Piaggio is still new to the US, as far as key blanks away.

Just like i said in my email, Providing the Milling is the same, you can rekey your TC.
Should take ye 30mins or so. Really Easy stuff!

Oh! Your welcome.

Cheers

Flathead screw driver. It's what I would use if I wanted something out of your topcase.

Ah, I see -- they rekey the box to match my ignition key. That way I don't need a new blank. (Yes, I can slide my ignition key into the top box lock, the keys looked very similar.)

Not sure how that's done, but that's why I am not a locksmith (or a lockpick).

Now I just need to find the time to get my scoot to a locksmith...

Thanks!

I suspect this $25 figure is only true if you haven't lost the keys to the top case, and can bring in the top case to the locksmith detached and with the ignition key next to it ("please rekey this lock on the box to use this key here").

The locksmiths I have talked to so far have sounded rather iffy on this job for some reason -- the first one said they don't rekey locks and referred me to another, emergency locksmith type of guy, who said he'll come take a look but can't guarantee that he can refit the lock to the key (though he could, of course, open the lock itself).

Being as I'm in NYC and the words "I'll come over" and "emergency service" have been thrown around, I suspect I am not going to get out of this for $25 or less.
