Hey ALL !

Got rebuild going on small frame Vespa '90. New bearings all around and new crank & piston (DR 130 kit). Here's the question putting everything back in case and I was wondering if a slight space / play in gear shifter (see pictures) is normal? My shims and circlips (front & back) are all there. Gears look like they are almost brand new and the shaft has little to no signs of wear. The gears line up with the input shaft no problem.

My only concern before I close case is .. should gears be able to slide back and forth on shaft with some slight amount of space between the front & back shims (see images).

I look forward to your response.

THX

Boo

From scooterhelp:

"The tolerance should be between 0.15 - 0.40mm. Anything more than this will mean removing both shims and getting the next oversize from your scooter shop."

So the gears can move back and forth on the shaft (within a tolerance) !? Do they make thicker shims for the shaft ? to reduce "the play" / distance ? or do I need to replace gears ? As mentioned .. they look in near new state .. but I know they are original from previous owner. All teeth and surfaces look great .. and they line up with input shaft nicely.

Just measured the space (0.50mm) 10 over the max. Thank you for that info. Can I ask you if there are different sizes for the oversized shims ?! I have a 3 speed gear box with shaft that looks good with no scoring or signs of heavy wear. As mentioned neither do the gears. So I'm wondering why I'm out of tolerance!? Thanks in advance for the info.

shift cross is worn. 3rd gear in backwards, can't tell from pics about the others. use the wear pattern on the driveshaft as a guide, also put one gear in at a time paying attention the shift cross lines up with the gear contact point. Also confirm that with cross in the neutral position that first and second spin freely.
