There is a real advantage to being able to do your own work on
your scooter with the hourly labor rate of service over $100 per hour.
Even though I do not work on my scooters, I keep good records.

Here are the maintenance intervals for my 2007 Suzuki Burgman 400AN

NO# Procedure Mileage Interval

21 Oil Change (Non synthetic) 2,183

4 Front / Rear Tires 11.461

3 Belts 15,280

2 Major Tune (After 3000 miles) 21,421
Includes new batteries.

The above intervals are over 45,842 miles and 14 riding Seasons.

Including adding three accessories (Back Rest, Hand Guards, and side wind
deflectors) the annual cost of maintenance was $317.63. Averages out
to 9.7 cents per mile for maintenance.

I am sure that different scooter models are different. I thought I would throw the above intervals out for general consideration.

Note, the Burgman has had zero mechanical issues since I brought it home new in 2007. It has never let me down on extended or short rides.

There's a reason the 400 Burgy continues while the 650 is relegated to the history books. It does the job, it holds up over time and it isn't burdened with the techno gimmickry of the 650. It even looks good.

Absolutely Kz. Well done Bob. My B400 hit 74,000 miles in 5 years. All trouble free. Our Vespas are the same. Just service on time and use good oil and filters, and the bike will last almost forever.

Incidentally, my old B400 now has over 110,000 miles on the clock without issue. I know the guy that bought it from me. Just normal consumables needed (incs variator and clutch). In contrast, both my company B650's needed new belts. One at 35,000 miles and the other at 45,000 miles. The reason for that was an idiot who worked at my company 'fast run in' the bikes for me. He though he was doing me a favour. He had no idea what he was doing (he read about it on the internet) and it stressed and over heated the metal drive belts! They always fail early when you do that to them.

Impressive statistics, thanks for sharing!

The tyres seem to last quite well, that is impressive too.

This explains two things for me: around here second hand 400 Burgmans 1)have been ridden quite a lot and 2)hold their value well.

The less stuff there is, the less prone to breakage.
Then ... quality and maintenance, that's enough.
