The cost of fuel at the pump is of course not the whole cost. While you exercise your 'right' to run your inefficient ICE vehicle at xyz dollars/pounds/Euro per gallon/litre - everyone else pays the cost from breathing air that's more polluted than it needs to be.

The medium term future is going to be electric. We just need the Grid to get smarter.
How do you think that electricity is being generated? Magic fairies and unicorns?

I'm here to tell you that you cannot power a modern civilization of the sort we've become accustomed to on Green Energy. And solar and wind have their own environmental issues. As does battery production.

If someone pushing Green Energy and electric cars for all isn't also pushing for a next gen nuclear plant design, and building lots of them, then they probably don't know enough about Thermodynamics and energy systems to fill a thimble.
Jim, I can take it from your post that you haven't even been reading this thread fully or haven't read it properly. Your questions are answered in there entirety.

I know a fair bit about thermodynamics.
Where I'm confused is how knowledge fills thimbles.
I mean, if you mean computer memory, a thimble could hold a lot.... Nerd emoticon
I actually had a thimble full of thermodynamics one day. I lost it pretty quickly though and have been looking for it ever since! Oh...hang on that was a needle in a haystack....Sooooorrry! Now where did I put that.

You can fit a lot of plutonium in a thimble.

Ps
NZ is currently at 80% renewable energy.
0% plutonium.

"Magic fairies and unicorns" are certainly not involved in electricity generation- and it's not a particularly helpful comment in discussion about a serious issue, I might add. Apart from PV, pretty much most electricity generation involves electromagnetic induction. Feel free to read up.

As far as your assertion goes about not being able to run modern civilisation on greener sources, in the UK in 2020, renewables contributed more to electricity generation than fossil fuels over the whole year (not just the 'easier' summer months). The rest of Europe is similarly advanced in weaning themselves off fossil fuel dependency.

Pleased the US, as one of the world's major polluters, has rejoined the Paris agreement. But also aware of how powerful fossil fuel lobbyists are.

Yes and the UK ran it's entire country on renewables (solar, hydro and wind) and clean nuclear for a 24hr period in 2019 during April. No gas, coal or other messy polluting fuels used. and renewables bore the main weight of supplying the generation power, with only a little nuclear thrown in at night. It was done to make sure we were on target to meet our needs with renewables.

According to the government by 2028 the Uk will get over 88% of it's electricity from renewables and the rest from nuclear. There will be some standby gas stations just in case of the need if the sun goes out...or the wind stops blowing!! Lol...
