Modern Vespa

Fortunate to obtain a 2008 Orange Stella with 473 miles. Always garage kept so cosmetically in great condition. But hasn't been started in years and years.

After bringing it home I gave it a good wash and then did the required maintenance. Drained the fuel tank, drained the two stroke oil, changed the oil, checked the plug gap (oily), cleaned carb on scooter (removed and stripped the jets and liberally sprayed carb cleaner all over jets and in ports. Used a piece of wire to clear the holes, etc.

Here is the thing. The PO said the two stroke pump was not working so he premixed the fuel. That was the reason why I drained the gas AND the two stroke oil. I did not put 2T oil into the reservoir. I put in some premix fuel and tried to star her up. Four or five kicks and she fired right up. But this thing smokes. Not a little. It makes the neighborhood disappear. Mosquitos and other insects flee...

The hotter the motor gets the more it smokes. It rides well and has decent power. This is what I am thinking...

The two stroke pump is working and was always working. The exhaust now has soo much oil in it that as it heats up it is burning the oil. There is evidence of a lot oil coming out of the exhaust all over the rear tire and frame. Does this sound likely? What else could it be?

If it is, how do I empty it out/clean it off?

It has the original exhaust with the catalytic converter. Maybe I should change the exhaust. Long term, if I keep the scooter, I would change the exhaust and upgrade the jets.

Put some clear tubing on the two stroke oil feed line, changing it out you'll get some air in the line. Leave the air there and when running you should see the bubble move if it working.

I am skeptical of the oil injector not working.

You have oil in the exhaust. Run it until it burns off.

You have double oil plus years of accumulation. Your premix plus ALL the oil still in the system after draining the tank.

You could try to flush out the system or just ride it around and hold your nose until it stops, could take a mile or two.

Did you check the condition of the oil line (and the fuel line)?
When I got my 1st 2005 PX it had been sitting in the crate for 3 years and both lines were dried up and cracking.
Of course I didn't know that at the time.
The oil line was dripping oil into the body below the tanks.
It was finding it's way out onto the rear of the floorboards and onto the exhaust.
It didn't smoke as much as yours but there was the constant smell of melting plastic (synthetic oil on the exhaust).
I thought I would never get all the oil cleaned out of the body but I did my best.
(Then I cracked the sight glass when I was putting it all back together, but that's a story for another time. )

I rode it around the neighborhood for about 30 minutes and the smoke did get less and less, but it is still smoking a little. I guess it will take some time to clear.
